Soulcalibur VI[]
Deceased. An intelligent woman who, like Setsuka, was of mixed Japanese and foreign heritage. She had a talent for reading other people. Anju lost her birth parents in the fourth year of the Eiroku Era (1561) in a war between Portuguese fighters and Japanese warriors in Hirado. Gekkyusai Kokonoe pitied her and took her in as his own daughter, and this was how she first met Shugen.
At the time, Shugen was feared as the "Demon of Hi Province" (later Hizen). Most did not even dare to speak his name, but Anju, who was a firm believer in the Christian faith and had faced prejudice herself, reached out to him. After meeting Anju, Shugen slowly began to understand the inner workings of the human heart, and the relationship between them grew into something more special.
One cold day after cherry blossoms fell from their branches, snow blanketed spring's flowers in winter frost. Amid this magical white landscape, Anju and Shugen shared two oaths with each other. In that quiet moment, the Demon of Hi Province swore to live on as a human.
However, one day, Anju brought him news that cast doubt and worry over his heart. Kidnappings and the slave trade were becoming more common, and the mastermind rumored to be behind these sacrilegious, corrupt practices was none other than the very people Shugen had believed were arbiters of justice.
Tragedies soon came one after another: Anju's death, Shugen's desertion, and the many sorrowful goodbyes that followed. Yet, all these events were what shaped Shugen's humanity. Perhaps destiny is not always so cruel as it seems.
