Assassin (アサシン?) refers to various different NPCs that have appeared in the Soul series. They have appeared in Soulcalibur II, as an NPC (in the original Japanese release) or an unlockable character (in later overseas versions); Soulcalibur III, as an NPC; and in Soulcalibur Legends, as one of the generic mooks encountered throughout the game.
Soulcalibur II[]
A generic assassin unlockable only in North American and European console ports of Soulcalibur II, and even then, only selectable in Practice mode, Team Battle mode, and Versus mode (the extra variants of these modes he is selectable as well). He does not have an in-game profile or ending, but he has a profile of his own in the "Soulcalibur II: The Complete Official Guide".[2] It does not state anything more than that they ("Assassin" is actually a group of people) are assassins of unknown origin (though seeing the Soulcalibur III Assassin in the Shrine of Kunpaetku seems to point that they are agents of Fygul Cestemus) in search of Soul Edge's fragments. Although his fighting style is based on that of Hwang Seong-gyeong from Soulcalibur, he has no biographical association with any character in the series. In battle, he uses the Chinese Blade "Assassin Blade". He is voiced by Kentaro Ito and has six different costumes in the game. His dialogue consists of laughter and kiais.
Profile[]
It is said that Assassins are private mercanaries and hired killers of a powerful lord or spy from the East. In actual fact, nothing is known about them. Their origin is secret but it is presumed that they are also looking for fragments of the Soul Edge sword. It is however known that all Assassins' victims claim to have a fragment of Soul Edge in their possession. Since the assassins emerged only after the demonic sword had been destroyed, it seems reasonable to suppose that there is a direct link. Nevertheless, the question remains: who is really employing the Assassins?[2]
Soulcalibur III[]
An unplayable opponent fought in Tales of Souls mode and one of the few surviving members from Astaroth's sect Fygul Cestemus. She uses the Kunai discipline, and can use either Kunai, Kaiken, or Nakinue when encountered.[1] Can easily be created in Character Creation mode.
"Assassin" is also one of the Create-a-Character jobs. Its weapons include: Chinese Sword, Wave Sword, Kunai, Soul of Tira, and Soul of Lizardman.
Soulcalibur Legends[]
Assassin, along with Berserker and Lizardman appears as a common enemy in his first costume from Soulcalibur II. He wields the Dragon Sword from Soulcalibur III, a weapon available to Chinese Sword users in that game.
Trivia[]
- During the initial release of Soulcalibur II, there was a debate between fans of the game concerning Assassin's true identity; some fans believed, that Assassin really was Hwang based on his fighting style, while others disagreed stating that there would be no reason for Hwang to hide his identity, and if Assassin was really Hwang, he would have been included in the actual game, and would have had a scene with either Seong Mi-na, or Yun-seong. Furthermore, the storyline of Soulcalibur II precludes the possibility of Hwang appearing; at the events of the game, Hwang was out fighting against Japanese forces. Some people also speculated that Assassin was another student of Seong Han Myeong, that had strayed from his master. Obviously, each side was under the impression that Assassin was just one person.
- As if acknowledging the theory that Hwang and Assassin were in fact the same person, during Seong Mi-Na's Soul Chronicle, Hwang wears headgear similar to Assassin when he infiltrates Fygul Cestemus.
- Hwang's design in Soulcalibur VI incorporates elements of Assassin's Soulcalibur II design.[3]
