Astaroth (アスタロス, Asutarosu) is a golem character in the Soul series of fighting games. This page refers to the original Astaroth who made his first appearance in Soulcalibur and has returned for Soulcalibur II, Soulcalibur III, Soulcalibur Legends (as Astaroth α), Soulcalibur IV and Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny.

In Soulcalibur V Astaroth is deceased and was replaced with a Mass Produced version of himself instead. However, the original Astaroth returned once again in Soulcalibur: Lost Swords and Soulcalibur: Unbreakable Soul.

What lies in his soul is Power.

Biography[]

Soulcalibur[]

Ares, the god of destruction, desired to possess Soul Edge, so he ordered Kunpaetku, the grand priest of the cult order Fygul Cestemus, to seek it out. Astaroth, a golem, was created in hellish heat under the divine protection of Ares to head up the quest. Kunpaetku ordered his creation, Astaroth, to find the demonic blade. As he watched Astaroth depart from the shrine, the grand priest laughed to himself as he planned to keep the Soul Edge and become a god himself. Unknown to Kunpaetku, however, Ares had possessed Astaroth with his servants, the Keres, to ensure that Kunpaetku would not betray him. When Astaroth finally found Soul Edge, he had lost half of himself during the battle with Sophitia.

Soulcalibur II[]

Deciding that Ares would not be pleased with the sword in this condition, he agreed to help the Azure Knight, Nightmare, build his power by collecting souls by slaughtering countless victims. As Astaroth was finally ready to betray Nightmare and take the Soul Edge from him, Kilik, Xianghua, and Maxi stormed Ostrheinsburg Castle, and Astaroth was killed by Maxi. Four years later, signs of Soul Edge began to re-emerge, and Ares resurrected Astaroth in an attempt to retrieve the evil blade once again. This time, though, his body had been infused with the shards of the Soul Edge, making him more powerful than ever before.

Astaroth had set out on the trail for the evil blade, but a problem arose. The grand priest Kunpaetku had realized his golem was not behaving as originally instructed – that another force now claimed ownership over Astaroth since his initial creation. In order to reclaim Astaroth as his servant, Kunpaetku performed a ritual on the lowest level of the cult's temple and unleashed a powerful curse on him. Astaroth fought back against the curse, for he had become an ideal host for the Keres, because of the fragments of Soul Edge he had taken in during his resurrection. He would destroy anyone who stood in his way, and now the cult had become nothing more than an obstacle in his path. Astaroth entered the temple to destroy the cult once and for all, and his whirlwind of destruction mowed down everything in his path.

Soulcalibur III[]

The curse had only fueled him with anger, and he was determined to destroy anything and everything he saw. The temple of the heretics had become a crucible of chaos. Astaroth pursued Kunpaetku into the deepest part of the temple, but the grand priest managed to escape at the last minute. Only the words the priest left behind remained, telling him that he was nothing more than a failed doll modeled after a mere human. Astaroth immediately stopped in his tracks, distracted with this new found horrible knowledge, and began to search the temple's archives for his roots. He had been made in the image of a man called only by the name "White Giant." Astaroth destroyed the facility in which Kunpaetku's ritual had been performed, and his curse faded such that he regained his true strength. He then proceeded to destroy the temple completely until it became unrecognizable debris, and nothing was left but chaos and rubble.

Fygul Cestemus had been wiped from history by the very being that they themselves had created. Astaroth stood within the ruined temple, quietly thinking to himself. If the "White Giant" he had been modeled after was as powerful as himself, then that man must surely be the greatest soul on earth, the perfect nourishment to resurrect the Soul Edge back to its full power. Perhaps Astaroth himself did not realize his own hidden desire to destroy the "White Giant" – to make himself a complete creature, unique without any model. The golem set out, his new objective set, disappearing into the mirages in the distance. Behind him was only a column of smoke rising from a ruinous wasteland; in front of him somewhere was the perfect soul.

Soulcalibur IV[]

Astaroth had been unconsciously fighting the thoughts of him being created in the image of the "White Giant". Perhaps because of this, his body has been twisted to the point where he no longer looks remotely human. But then he finally found the White Giant and nearly killed him. Suddenly, he realized that he had been serving Ares all this time. This thought made him insane, and he destroyed the landscape around him.

Then Tira approached him, and told him that she can bring him to a fitting place where he could hunt a god. However, Astaroth can clearly see that she is a very loyal servant of the evil sword, and she was just using him. Then again, she was right about the fact that he needed a better place to find souls. So he went to Ostrheinsburg and became Nightmare's servant once again, only this time, he plans to devour everything; those who descend upon Ostrheinsburg, and even Soul Edge itself.

Profile[]

Soulcalibur[]

The god of destruction Palgaea desired to possess the demonic blade Soul Edge and ordered his grand priest Kunpaetku to seek out Soul Edge.

Astaroth was created in hellish heat under the divine protection of the god destruction to head up the quest. The grand priest Kunpaetku ordered his creation, the giant Astaroth, to find the demonic blade.

As he gazed upon Astaroth as he departed from the shrine with a giant axe in hand, the grand priest laughed to himself, "If I possessed this immense power that even the gods desire, I shall become a god myself!"

Chapter VIII: A Soldier of the Heretic[1]

"Where... here... I... what..."

Hot air burned its throat; groaning spells clung to the ears. It opened its eyes. The chants echoed in the grand hall and ceased.

It recognized that a man stood high above it muttering, "Creation from nothing..."

"What... is... this monster? Is this…? I…"

"I made a first step toward a god…", murmured the man in an ecstasy.

"Shut up... you don't bother... what?"

It felt anger at the moment it was born, then found another feeling behind the man. It stared, but there was nothing.

"Agg... Uhrrrggggg... !"

It was bombarded with memories. At first it seemed the memories of a warrior who was fighting for something he looked for, but then followed by the chorus of shrieks of death.

Fair, despair, flash of blades, pain, and darkness.

"Ugrrr......GhrraaaaaAAAAA.......!!!"

It cried out in the pain of birth.

Deep in the shrine the Grand Priest, Kyumm mrl py eltzk, ordered to the giant he created; "Find the demonic sword 'Soul Edge'!"

As the monster, brandishing an ax, was leaving the shrine, Kyumm mrl py eltzk grinned and yelled, "The great power that even god desires... With this power I shall reach the status of a god!"

Soulcalibur II[]

Receiving Ares' oracle to seek the sword, the grand priest Kunpaetku used the cult's black arts to create a golem. The grand priest named the golem Astaroth.

When Astaroth eventually found it, the sword was in a weakened state, having lost half of itself in battle.

Deciding that his god would not be pleased with the blade in this condition, the golem followed the orders of Nightmare (who wielded the sword at the time) and slaughtered countless victims in order to strengthen the unholy weapon. Three years later, the blade had recovered its power, and the time was nearing for Astaroth to take Soul Edge from Nightmare's grasp.

Unfortunately for Astaroth, he was defeated by one individual before he could accomplish his goal. Astaroth was a subject of bitter hatred for those who managed to survive his innumerable massacres.

Four years later, Astaroth was resurrected. It was a feat only superhuman powers could invoke. It could be said that it was a form of miracle. Astaroth's body also absorbed pieces of Soul Edge, which made him far more powerful and merciless.

Eventually, Astaroth must have remembered his purpose, for he hefted his familiar ax and vanished into the mist.

The evil sword Soul Edge continued to gorge upon human hatred and threatened to envelop the entire world with its fragments...

Hephaestus, the Olympian god of forge, was not the only god who took notice of the sword's power. But unlike Hephaestus, who bore misgivings about Soul Edge, the other god was genuinely intrigued with the weapon. To Ares, the god of war, the evil blade's cursed origins and nature were of little concern. He simply wished to possess Soul Edge for himself.

Ultimately, the conflict of the two gods' desires began to unfold in the human world.

Ares looked to a heretical order to help him obtain Soul Edge. The desert-dwelling cult worshipped him as Palgaea the Executioner. Receiving Ares' oracle to seek the sword, the grand priest Kunpaetku used the cult's black arts to create a golem. The grand priest named the golem Astaroth, bestowed it with a giant ax infused with a powerful curse, and sent it on a mission to search for the evil blade.

Kunpaetku secretly desired Soul Edge for himself, for the sword bore a power that even the gods sought after. But deceiving a god was no easy task. Little did the grand priest know that Ares' servant, Ker-the agent of death- dwelled within Astaroth.

Contrary to its creator's intentions, Astaroth sought after Soul Edge for the god of war. Astaroth became the subject of bitter hatred for those who managed to survive his innumerable massacres

Three years later, the blade had recovered its power, and the time was nearing for Astaroth to take Soul Edge from Nightmare's grasp. But Astaroth never saw his opportunity. Of all the souls harboring hatred for Astaroth, one soul with an irrepressible desire for vengeance reached Nightmare's stronghold in Ostrheinsburg and destroyed the golem. This man sought to avenge his comrades who were slain by Astaroth.

Although from a human standpoint Astaroth was a wicked being, he was nevertheless the servant of a god. Immediately after his servant was destroyed, the infuriated god of war unleashed his punishment. The ground buckled beneath the man-who was already seriously wounded from the battle-and he disappeared into the earth. So sudden were these events that the man had nary a moment to rejoice in his victory.

Soon after the battle against Astaroth, the revenge seeker's friends defeated Nightmare and shattered Soul Edge. They searched for the slayer of Astaroth for some time, but they eventually lost hope of finding him and left. For a while thereafter, peace returned to the world.

Four years passed since that time.

Had Astaroth simply been a creation of a mere mortal, it would have been an impossible feat. Nevertheless, the god of war's divine powers and Ker, the agent of death, along with the soil in Ostrheinsburg made it feasible. The Ostrheinsburg grounds, sated with the blood of those slain by Nightmare and cursed by their deep-seated hatred of him, acted as the perfect medium for Astaroth's resurrection.

When he was destroyed, Astaroth lost much of the weaknesses he had obtained as a result of being created with the aid of human hands. Moreover, during his regeneration, his new body absorbed several Soul Edge fragments that were nearby. This made Astaroth far more powerful and merciless.

Eventually, Astaroth must have remembered his purpose, for he hefted his familiar ax and vanished into the mist. [2]

Soulcalibur III[]

In-game Profile[]

After reviving, Astaroth set out again to locate the whereabouts of Soul Edge in order to offer it before Ares, the god of destruction and war.

The leader of the evil cult and Astaroth's creator, the grand priest Kunpaetku, realized that his servant was not acting as instructed and cast a controlling curse on Astaroth from the temple.

But with the fragment of the cursed sword and the power of Ker, the agent of death, Astaroth resisted the curse.

To Astaroth, the cult was now nothing more than an obstacle in his path. The monster returned to the temple of his birth and became a whirlwind of destruction.

Pursued into the deepest part of the temple by Astaroth, the grand priest escaped at the last moment, leaving behind these words:

"You failure! You may have been modeled after a human, but in the end, you're nothing more than a doll!"

Astaroth could not believe what he heard. At those words, Astaroth began searching through the crumbling temple and eventually learned that he had been created in the image of someone known as the "white giant."

After utterly destroying the structure, Astaroth thought to himself. His model, this "white giant," must surely be the most powerful soul in the world. He would offer up that soul as a sacrifice to the cursed sword.

His giant form began to move. He had chosen his next objective.

Astaroth himself did not realize the hidden desire within him to destroy the white giant so that he could become complete--a unique being with no model.

Soulcalibur IV[]

When he learned the truth of his origins--that he had been modeled after a frail human--it shook Astaroth to his core. He unconsciously fought against that fact for some time afterward, until he found the human and nearly tore him apart. But then everything inside him turned inside out; he finally gained an awareness of himself. Until now, he had been at the mercy of his master, the god of destruction, and done his bidding. That made him seethe with rage. Ferocious thoughts seized him; Astaroth swung his ax wildly, and by the time he relented, the landscape had been changed irrevocably.

As Astaroth continued his barbarities, a girl calling herself Tira appeared before him with counsel, "Come. If you seek the power to hunt a god, I know a more fitting place." It was clear to him she was Soul Edge's servant, and only sought to use him. But it was true he needed richer pastures from which to reap souls.

Guided by ebon wings, Astaroth set foot in Ostrheinsburg just as he had years ago. Once again, he entered Nightmare's service, pretending to obey while waiting for the chance to seize his power. This time, however, he had a different purpose, and no soul but his own commanded him.

Let the fools descend upon Ostrheinsburg; their souls will be mine! I will devour everything, including Soul Edge itself!

Astaroth had cornered and defeated his foe at last, and the experience left the golem immeasurably changed. For so long he had been at the mercy of the "guest" inside him—Ker, a servant of the god of destruction. But now, after a long struggle, he had finally gained an awareness of himself. Although, to be precise, he had been aware of himself to an extent for some time now—his violent, coarse personality and his insatiable destructive impulses. But those scraps of "individuality" were no more than tools that Palgaea, god of destruction, had used to control Astaroth with ease.

When Astaroth learned the truth of his origins—that he had been modeled after a frail human—it had shaken him to the core. He had unconsciously fought against that fact for some time afterward, until he had found the human he had been modeled after and nearly torn him apart. But as he pinned the man to the ground, everything inside him turned upside down. Now that his emotions had something to focus on, his body transformed in turn. Cracks began to crisscross Palgaea's puppet, and from behind the fissures Astaroth's ego poured out and surrounded him with a red-hot ominous light.

When the confusion of this metamorphosis had subsided, Astaroth glanced around, but the man he had thought defeated was nowhere in sight. When he peered over the tall cliff and down into the rapids below, he realized the man had thrown himself off to escape. Yet that mattered little to the new Astaroth. He thought back on the many atrocities he had committed, all to obtained Soul Edge, to restore it to power, at the bidding of Palgaea, his "master." His chest boiled with rage. He had followed orders without question. He had been used as a convenient pawn. Why had he unflinchingly obeyed, as if it were the only natural thing to do?

His fury swelled in an instant and swept though his new body. From inside, Palgaea's servant Ker let out a shriek in protest, only to be drowned out by Astaroth's rush of emotion. Ker fell silent and yielded control of the golem to these new, ferocious thoughts. Astaroth raised his giant axe, and brought it down with all his might, opening a great fissure in the ground. The earth screamed. What a sight it made; it was as if an earthquake had struck that very spot. He let the rage take him on a wild rampage, and by the time he relented, the landscape was irrevocably changed.

Astaroth committed barbarity after barbarity; slaughtering and pillaging all that he saw. But this he did for his own sake. The fragments of Soul Edge within him had become his flesh and blood; now he constantly hungered for souls, and drank them up greedily. Then, one day, he was greeted by a flurry of black wings. Their master—a mass of evil in the guise of a girl—called herself Tira.

She beckoned to Astaroth with a whisper. "Keep absorbing souls, and who knows how powerful you'll become. Why, who's to say you couldn't even wolf down some old, forgotten god? But you need to feast on more powerful prey. Come. If you seek the power to hunt a god, I will show you a better place to go."

Astaroth knew in an instant that the girl before him served Soul Edge. This one seeks to use me just like the last god, he thought. Still, it was true he needed richer pastures from which to reap souls and grow stronger. He watched as the girl turned and pressed onward. Very well, he thought, but I have plans of my own.

Years before, when Nightmare had cloaked Europe in terror, the "Black Giant" Astaroth had wrought havoc in his service. Now, the Black Giant once again set foot in the dark city of Ostrheinsburg. Once again, he entered Nightmare's service, pretending to obey while waiting for the chance to seize his power. This time, however, he had a different purpose, and no soul but his own commanded him.

"Let the fools descend upon Ostrheinsburg; their souls will be mine! I will devour everything, right down to Soul Edge itself!"[3]

Astaroth: "Need...more...souls!"
Engulfed in crimson hellfire, the two figures eventually fade from view.
What were Astaroth's true intentions? There is no way to know...

Soul Calibur IV Astaroth's Ending

Algol falls to the floor on the top of the Tower of Remembrance, with Astaroth looking down on him.
Algol: Your power exceeds that of my own. I am impressed!
Algol dies, the power of Soul Edge leaving his body and entering Astaroth, who chuckles. Astaroth: So this is the power of Soul Edge! No, it's not enough for me. I need more!
Astaroth continues consuming power as the screen fades to black. When it fades back, it shows a giant Astaroth stomping through the Distant marsh
Astaroth: Give me more, I want more!
Astaroth screams, teeming with the power of Soul Edge. The screen fades to black, with a text that reads:"His evil spreads throughout the world. It is the roar that announces the beginning of the dark ages."

Fighting Style[]

Astaroth is well known in the Soul Series for performing powerful attacks and throw moves. His moves are quite slow in execution however, which leads to him having a disadvantage against faster characters such as Taki. He is most effective when used at long range since many of his attacks utilize that aspect in their properties. Astaroth is somewhat regarded in terms of tournament use between mid to high tier. He fights much like Rock and even has some of the same moves.

Soulcalibur IV[]

Gyulkus[]

Astaroth was created by Fygul Cestemus, a heretical cult that called themselves the "guardians of natural order." In the language unique to this cult, gyulkus means "a fight (to protect the temple)," and any battle fought for the sake of the cult was referred to as such.

Kunpaetku, the grand priest of the cult, harbored an ambition to become as powerful as the god they worshipped, the Executioner himself. But the god would not accept such hubris. In retribution, he sent Astaroth, the golem that the cult itself had created, to destroy and wipe them from the pages of history.

Astaroth has grown might, unstoppable. His rage blazes within him and his rampage of destruction consumes everything in its path. His final target is his former master, the Executioner himself: Palgaea.

Critical Finish[]

Eternal Damnation: Astaroth's Critical Finish in Soulcalibur IV sends his opponent crashing to the ground before he catches them on the end of his axe. He then drags them around the arena before sending them sailing into the air. Astaroth's Critical Finish is shared with Rock and Ashlotte, the only difference being their victory poses and the symbols that appears at the end. (Astaroth and Ashlotte both have their symbols of their cult appear—yellow for the former and violet for the latter).

Weapon Arts[]

Weapon Arts are special moves in Soulcalibur: Lost Swords which act very similar to the Critical Edge system from Soulcalibur V.

  • Demented Arc: That's Ax Lower Cannon with an guaranteed additional hit if delivered successfully.
  • Breath of Hell: It's a long version of his attack called Breath of Hades. It's not an unblockable attack, but goes to full length even when the enemy is caught in mid-air.
  • Hades Crush: That's Astaroth's attack in SCIV, but now it is performed way quicker and also causes a tremor.
  • Tide Rush: That's a Poseidon Tide Rush attack.
  • Cestemus Doctrine: It's his Critical Edge from Soulcalibur V with a safe start.
