- "I welcome you... to the pure world I have forged!"
- — Elysium
Elysium (エリュシオン, Eryushion, Greek: Ἠλύσιον) is a character in the Soul series. She appears from Soulcalibur onwards in her sword form Soul Calibur, but makes her debut appearance as Elysium in Soulcalibur V as the main antagonist and the final boss. She is the spirit and will of Soul Calibur, similar to how Inferno is the living incarnation of Soul Edge.
Appearance[]
She is wearing revealing attire, similar to a Greek goddess. She wears a white cloth covering her cleavage, under a semi-transparent sheet. She also wears a semi-transparent miniskirt over white 'panties'. She wears a Greek cloth solea on her feet. And a cloth on her left arm, and a gold bracelet on her right wrist. On her head, she wears a gold and glass helmet with four wings and a diamond. She has two long sparkling wings on her back. She has long, braided hair with a blue bow, and is in general very similar to Sophitia.
Despite the feminine appearance, Elysium possesses no true sex, only choosing to present 'herself' in a female shape (Elysium claims that she is perceived in this fashion by Patroklos out of his own choosing, modeling her after Sophitia, who is his mother).
Abilities[]
Due to being the spirit of Soul Calibur, Elysium is incredibly powerful. Elysium can perfectly mimic and improve upon any fighting style used by a female, as well as morph Soul Calibur into a form matching the fighting styles. She can also transport herself and her opponent into Astral Chaos, and can protect people within this realm. If needed, she can possess whoever wields Soul Calibur and fight using their body (as long as she is in control, one of the host's arms is crystallized), allowing them to use the sword's full power. She is also capable of flight and ice crystal manipulation, creating as many spiked ice crystals as she wishes and trapping foes inside large ice crystals.
Due to her existing as a spirit her height and weight are impossible to measure.
History[]
Elysium is the entity that guides the wielder of the Soul Calibur, "born" from the purification ritual that created Soul Calibur. Created from half of Algol's soul, the ritual was flawed due to Algol's lust for power, giving rise to a will that was similar in nature to Soul Edge's own. The tribe assigned to guard Soul Calibur recognized this and sealed the sword's will away, implementing rules to safeguard against the possibility that Soul Calibur's similarities to Soul Edge ran deeper than reading its wielder's soul and shapeshifting. Millennia later, the clash between Soul Edge - wielded by Nightmare - and Soul Calibur - wielded by Siegfried - broke the seal placed on Elysium. Choosing Siegfried as her host due to their mutual hatred for Soul Edge and his desire for redemption making him an easy pawn, she covered his body in crystal armor to protect and heal him. After Nightmare was slain and Soul Edge shattered, Elysium awaited the cursed sword's inevitable return. Siegfried's growing suspicions of Soul Calibur made her deem him unworthy as a host, so she changed her form and awaited a new host she could manipulate.
In the Story Mode, she guided Patroklos on his journey to restore Soul Calibur. She wanted Patroklos to resurrect Soul Calibur, saying that with the maximum power of Soul Calibur, he would save Pyrrha of the malfestation. This led Patroklos to get the other two treasures, Kali-Yuga and Dvapara-Yuga, which were in the hands of Xiba and Leixia respectively. After the resurrection of Soul Calibur, Elysium appears saying that with this power, he could save Pyrrha and the world from the evils of Soul Edge and its wielder, making him wield Soul Calibur, and she says "Good boy, I'm so proud of you" and convincing him to kill his sister beside her. However at the end, she revealed herself to be a manifestation that Patroklos created with Soul Calibur. At Episode 20, Elysium brought Patroklos to the Utopia of the Blessed and seeing that he was no longer able to defeat Soul Edge, she decided to use his body to destroy the new wielder of Soul Edge. However, Patroklos refused and defeated her in battle. As her body disintegrated and disappeared, Patroklos returned to the real world, saying, "Good-bye, Mother".
Personality[]
Elysium is a spirit of fierce judgment. She is solely focused on her intention to destroy Soul Edge and its wielder. While she is seemingly benevolent of nature, she is ruthless in her pursuit of her ultimate destiny, willing to take anything she needs, in order to fulfill it. Her intentions are pure as she wants to prevent her brother Inferno from causing destruction of the world and has a strong sense of justice, but they can cause her to be manipulative and ruthless.
Weapon[]
Spirit Sword Soul Calibur[]
The spirit sword Soul Calibur exists for the sole purpose of destroying the cursed blade Soul Edge.
With the core shape of a crystal, Soul Calibur is able to change its form to suit its wielder. The "spirit shard" it can emit from its blade acts as both a weapon to cut down enemies and a healing aid to preserve the life of its host.
The spirit sword also has the ability to "read" its host's soul, and will resort to direct communication if it feels that is necessary for the purpose of accomplishing their mutual goals.
The reason Soul Calibur seems to possess the same abilities as Soul Edge is because it was originally forged from a fragment of the cursed blade. The "Guardians of the Spirit Sword", who had protected it for mony generations, established a law that said, "Any who have once gripped the spirit sword shall not twice swing its blade." This meant that a person was not allowed to be Soul Calibur's host more than once; a rule that was put in place because they knew the spirit sword was once a part of the cursed blade, an association that carried with it terrifying possibilities.
Mimic Weapons Details[]
- Hilde: It has a dark blue color on the scabbard and the handle of the lance, while the sword and spear has the Soul Calibur weapon design.
- Ivy: It has a similar look to Ivy's Soul Calibur weapon from Soulcalibur IV and Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, but with a different handle.
- Leixia: Elysium uses the same Soul Calibur weapon design as Xianghua.
- Natsu: It has a similar look to one of Taki's weapons, Kris Naga, but recolored blue.
- Pyrrha & Pyrrha Ω: It is the same as Patroklos' Soul Calibur weapon set.
- Tira: It looks similar to Tira's weapon, Bifrost.
- Viola: It has a similar look to the Master (Crystal Ball), but brighter and with a light blue color.
Fighting Style[]
Much like Edge Master and Kilik, Elysium mimics the moves of other characters. While Kilik mimics all the male characters, Elysium mimics all of the female characters.
Much like when Edge Master or Kilik mimic Xiba, Elysium gets special advantages when she uses the style of Pyrrha Ω. These changes essentially make her a more "true" copy of Sophitia. For example, she now has Sophitia's original Angel Step and Twin Angel Step in place of Pyrrha Ω's toned down version, Nemesis Step. Because of this, many of her attacks involving Angel Strike (formerly Nemesis Strike) have been altered considerably. Namely, they grant Elysium frame advantage equivalent to Sophitia's Soulcalibur IV incarnation, and deal much more damage than Pyrrha Ω's Nemesis Strike. Elysium also copies the female's taunts, but when she mimics the fighting style of Pyrrha Ω, the taunt is changed. Despite major changes, Elysium still retains Pyrrha Ω's fighting stance rather than Sophitia's.
Memories of Soul Calibur[]
Soul Calibur was once a part of Soul Edge, and the two share many abilities. The most obvious example of this is their common ability to read their host's soul and change their physical form accordingly. If the spirit sword's will were ever to take on a physical form, it would no doubt appear in the form most feared by its enemies, or perhaps it would take on a beautifully idealistic form to swing judgement's heavy blade.
Critical Edge[]
Eleusian Initiation: Unlike Edge Master and Kilik, Elysium has a unique Critical Edge. Translucent crystal wings appear in her back, she then hovers above the ground, surrounded by multicolored light, while her opponent gets hit nineteen times by an invisible force. This always hits the opponent regardless of range or positioning, and can only be avoided by guarding. If the Critical Edge happens to be guarded by a Just Guard, they will be pushed away from her, making it unable to punish her. But if the opponent has long-ranged attacks like Astaroth, Ivy, or Nightmare, she can be punished.

Trivia[]
General[]
- Elysium shares the same Japanese and English voice actors as Sophitia.
- Along with Inferno, she is the only official canon character not to have a what lies in her soul is... feature.
- Just like Soul Edge/Inferno used Cervantes and Siegfried as hosts, Soul Calibur/Elysium tried to use α Patroklos upon his resistance to kill Pyrrha. But since Siegfried wanted the Soul Edge destroyed, she didn't need to possess him. However unknown to her, Siegfried, like Patroklos and Cassandra, only want to destroy the cursed sword, not along with its host.
- Elysium is considered the first and so far only female mimic character in the whole series, however, being the spirit of a sword, she doesn't have an actual gender.
- Elysium was born from Algol's lust for power and was sealed away by the Guardians of the Spirit Sword, who instituted a rule that Soul Calibur never be wielded by the same person twice to prevent it from taking over its host. The seal placed on her was broken by Siegfried's duel with Nightmare at the end of SoulCalibur III.
Soulcalibur IV[]
- In Cassandra's ending, Elysium talks to her when she holds the Soul Calibur.
- According to the Soulcalibur IV Guide released by BradyGames, there is a dark soul residing inside of Soul Calibur which is a half of Algol's soul, while the Hero King appearing in Soulcalibur IV and Soulcalibur V is in fact the other half of Algol's soul. Assuming this interpretation is canon, Elysium is in fact a half of Algol's soul and judging by her nature she is also the manifestation of Algol's hatred for Soul Edge, as the present Algol shows no grudge against Soul Edge.
Soulcalibur V[]
- In order to appeal to Patroklos better, Elysium took on the form of Sophitia Alexandra, and appears as her in several cutscenes in the game.
- When defeating Patroklos, she will speak in Sophitia's voice in her victory quote.
- Elysium only uses Pyrrha Ω's fighting style in Story Mode and Legendary Souls Mode.
- When mimicking Pyrrha Ω, some of the moves will be alternated.
- Elysium will use Sophitia's Painful Fate instead of Omega's version.
- Elysium uses the same animation that Cassandra has in Soulcalibur II and Soulcalibur III when performing a Soul Charge , and in Soulcalibur IV before she does her Critical Finish as a taunt.
- However, when using Elysium's fighting style, a created character won't use Elysium's different taunt.
- Elysium is the only mimic character to have her own Critical Edge.
- Elysium's artwork differs from her in-game appearance: she is missing her choker in her artwork. Also, similarly to Viola and Tira, Elysium's breasts are much bigger in her 2D artwork than in-game. This is caused by Takuji Kawano's style. This applies to all of the artworks, but is most visible in her Soulcalibur V artwork.
- Elysium doesn't have special quotes for the other people who wielded Soul Calibur: Siegfried and Algol.
- Elysium is considered to be the final boss, and the first female boss in the main series, despite being a genderless spirit. She is also the second final boss in the series to be a mimic character, the first being Inferno.
- Her theme, Sacred Dawn, has two different versions: the normal one, and a version without the orchestra in the intro (starting with the choir, then going into the orchestra). The latter can only be heard in Story Mode, and is not on the OST.
- Elysium's clothing set in Character Creation is referred to as the Absolution set.
- Elysium's 2P costume is based on an unused costume concept art that was originally going to be for Pyrrha.
- In addition, she is the only final boss in the series to have two unique costumes rather than a palette swap.
- Her titles in Quick Match mode are "Rampant Spirit" and "Phoenix".
- Upon the player being victorious in combat (the final round), the background music will immediately cease. This only occurs during the Story Mode of Soulcalibur V.
- Elysium's costume has wings in the headgear and in the leg gear, similar to the god Hermes.
- Elysium's Critical Edge, Elysian Initiation, is similar to Gill's Super Art Seraphic Wing from Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Both have their respected character floating upward into the air with wings appearing and both attacks are impossible to avoid and can only be blocked.
- When Elysium mimics the style of Leixia, she uses the same version of Soul Calibur as in Soulcalibur II.
- Elysium, Algol and Ezio Auditore are the only characters who's Critical Edges cannot be mimicked by either Edge Master or Kilik. Elysium's can be used by created characters, however.
Soulcalibur: Lost Swords[]
- Sophitia wears Elysium's attire in one of the missions.
Etymology[]
The name Elysium comes from the Greek afterlife of bliss. The Elysian fields are the part of the underworld where those chosen by the gods, righteous or heroic would live happily for all eternity. This is comparable to the idea of heaven in many modern religions.
As Elysium is understood to be the opposite of Inferno, it is worth noting that the word "Inferno" is Latin and "Elysium" is taken from the Greek "Elysion pedion". Traditionally, the opposing counterpart of "Inferno" is "Paradiso", while the opposing counterpart of the Elysian fields is "Tartaros" or "Tartarus".
