Lorena was born to loving parents who raised her during her childhood in a coastal village located in El Salvador, New Spain. As a young girl, Lorena and her maternal cousin Leandra frequently played with each other. Unfortunately for Lorena, her joyful family life would come to an end when she was eleven years old. Pirates ransacked the village and killed her parents in doing so. A swordswoman named Camilla, who happened to be visiting, was able to save the young girl a horrible fate, slaying her attackers and escorting her to safety. Camilla, who also managed to rescue another girl, Zimra, from the flames, adopted Lorena as her own and taught both the way of the sword. Lorena and Zimra trained with each other every day and became very close. When they approached adulthood, they thanked their adoptive mother for taking care of them before becoming mercenaries in order to survive in the best way they knew how to.

Early in their career, Lorena and Zimra became employed under Eduardo, a wealthy merchant, to serve has his personal guards. Eduardo proved to be a generous and kind employer and treated both Lorena and Zimra very well. In the year 1586, Eduardo, who was a widower, would ask Lorena for her hand in marriage, and reciprocating his feelings due to his kindness towards her, she accepted his proposal.

Three years later, malfested assassins infiltrated Eduardo's manor. Concerned for his children's safety and also not wanting them to become fatherless, the weapons merchant decided to bring himself, his wife and his three children to an Aval Organization hideout located in Spain, while his servant and doppelgänger Julio stayed behind to serve as a decoy. Lorena and her family were accompanied by Xochitl, an indigenous girl whom Lorena saved from brigands only a few years prior, and they boarded the Graceful Gale under Eileen, a privateer whom was well-acquainted with Eduardo.
