Vercci de Burg (ベルチー・デ・ブルク Beruchii de buruku?) is an Italian weapons merchant, known as the "Merchant of Death" (死の商人 Shi no Shounin) due to his business with the Spanish Armada. Vercci desired Soul Edge to form part of his collection of rare weapons, and Voldo stood as the head of the expeditions in his search, even contracting the services of the feared Spanish Captain Cervantes de Leon, and later accompanied Vercci when he decided to take the search personally. When word came that the Italian Wars had broken out and that Vercci's possessions were among the first targets, Vercci grew infuriated and paranoid.

Vercci moved his fleet, his only remaining possession, to an uninhabited island off the coast of in the Mediterranean Sea and dug a 50-meter deep shaft that would serve as his tomb and vault. Voldo would later be instructed to slay the sailors that helped in the construction to avoid the location of Vercci's "Money Pit" being revealed, then later shut himself in with his deceased master.

Profile[]

Soulcalibur VI[]

Vercci de Burg was a weapons merchant from southern Italy, famous for saying, "Nothing exists which is not in my pocket." A master of virtually every weapon under the sun, he was also a shrewd negotiator and cunning businessman who made a fortune dealing in arms in the war-ravaged world. His skill, wealth, and infamy earned him the moniker "the Merchant of Death," and his influence even extended to the underworld.
The Merchant of Death eventually set his eyes on the ultimate weapon, Soul Edge. He even went so far as to hire the dread pirate Cervantes to locate it for him. When the pirate failed to produce the sword, however, Vercci himself led a crew across the seas in search of the fabled blade.
While Vercci was abroad, Italy was struck with war and his family's fortune was lost. Nothing could have been more vexing for Vercci. Driven mad with rage, he bought an island in the Mediterranean with the last of his wealth and ordered the construction of a deep vault to protect his remaining treasures. By the time this vault was complete, Italy's wars had subsided and Vercci himself had passed away. The only one left to carry on his legacy was a single loyal guard who continued to watch over his master's treasures.

Trivia[]

  • The Money Pit would later become Voldo's staple stage, featuring in every game in different locations like the main vault in Soul Edge or the Top Tier in Soulcalibur II.
  • It is possible to control Vercci via the use of cheat devices in Soul Edge. He uses Cervantes's fighting style. For some reason he is called "Belti" during this. This may be due to a translation error - i.e., Voiced labiodental fricatives (/v/ sounds) did not originally exist in Japanese and, as such, it was far more common to use "B" characters to represent /v/ sounds (for example, violin can be spelt as "baiorin" (バイオリン)), and Vercci's name in Japanese is spelt with the ベ (be) character rather than the ヴェ (ve) characters; and for cci/ti, the チ character can be romanised as either "chi" (in the Hepburn system of romanisation) or "ti" (in the Kunrei-Shiki system of romanisation).
    • It's hard to tell whether his name was supposed to be Vercci or Belti, but considering the name has been Vercci for the whole series, Vercci is probably the correct translation. On the other hand, Belti could be his original name, then it might have been changed to Vercci.
  • The rather curious official description of Voldo's family ties in Soulcalibur V suggests that Vercci is still alive, in one way or another. Whether this is true or it's just Voldo's hallucination, remains to be seen.
  • He is voiced by Takashi Nagasako in Japanese and Dean Harrington in English for his appearance in Voldo's Soul Edge ending.

Notes[]

  • ^α While Enrico only refers to Vercci simply as his brother in the English script, in the Japanese script he specifically refers to him as aniue (兄上).
