"You dare to defy me, wretched fool!"
— Greed

Greed (グリード Gurīdo?) is a fictional character in Namco's Soul series of fighting games. He is a special "Prepare to Defend Yourself" challenge on Soulcalibur III’s Tales of Souls, in which he steals all the player's gained money up until that point if he wins the battle, and also an unlockable Bonus Character. He represents the "Kunai" Create-a-Soul discipline.

Biography[]

Greed is part of a mysterious and secretive organization of thieves that works in the shadows. Many of his personal details remain a mystery, even his real name as he is always referred to simply as "Greed."

Being a thief, he stalks his prey from the shadows and takes their goods and money from them. He seems to enjoy the act of killing more than stealing, and is always in search of more victims.

He is referred to as "Number Four" within his organization and views his colleague Miser as a rival. His group opposes Yoshimitsu's Manjitou.

He is quickly defeated by Heishiro Mitsurugi prior to the events of Soulcalibur IV when he tries to rob him of his fragment of Soul Edge.

Soulcalibur III[]

The aged man wore a satisfied smile after finishing one of his "hunts." He had his poor victim's treasures in his hand, though he was not interested in them.
A member of a bandit group, "Greed" was his alias--a name that the public would never hear. He threw down the spoils in his dwelling, while his thoughts wandered back to his last "hunt." As he eyed his faintly smeared blade, he could feel his contentment quickly turn to hunger. The aged man, who had a ferocious voracity, thought back to all the lives he had taken.
"I cannot stop."
A gold coin faintly shone on the floor of a barely lit room, yet his attention was fixated on the smeared katana.
Can this thirst ever be quenched?
The old man, never satiated, let his thoughts dwell on his next "hunt."[1]

Soulcalibur VI[]

In the sidequest, "The Fading Light", Greed and Bilk arrive at Count Valentine's mansion, which their group seems to use as a base. Fiddler shouts at the two to assist him and Miser, worried that they'll be killed by a man named Shylock due to the two of them having difficulty in killing the Conduit, who had entered the mansion in search of information of Soul Edge. Before Greed and Bilk could enter the battle, the Conduit escapes the mansion. Neither Greed nor any of his colleagues are seen after this.

Gameplay[]

Like Taki, Greed and the ninja style utilize a style that uses dual kunai for a speed based style that focuses on quick attacks. Greed is very similar to Taki as he shares the same general traits; he has quick strikes, as well as strings that can be difficult to react to and also is able to incorporate ninjutsu based ninpo in his moveset that allow him to teleport, although in a limited fashion either away or closer to his opponent, and this can also be done after certain attacks. He is also quite acrobatic as he has a couple of attacks he can use to guard break his opponents, and his also able to able to jump towards his opponent to quickly close gaps while attacking.

While effective, he generally suffers from lack of reach and must be up close to really be a threat to his opponent, and his damage output isn't that high which makes him have to play in a combo based fashion to deal substantial damage. His more powerful attacks are also quite telegraphed and can easily be avoided by sidestepping. His unblockable attack is also one of the more easy to avoid as well, as it's a fire breathing attack that has good reach but can easily be ducked. Overall, Greed is a more simplistic bonus character to utilize who doesn't require much skill to comfortably use as his moveset is fairly straightforward.

Greed does not have a stage of his own, though he can be found on Tales of Souls in the following stages as a "Prepare to Defend Yourself" challenge: Sacred Mt. Fuji - Lava Bed, Lotus Garden, Jurakudai Villa, Battle in the Strait, Kunpaetku Shrine Ruin, Ling Sheng-Su Temple Ruin and Underground Buddhist Sanctum.
