Biography[]
Soulcalibur[]
One night, his "sister", Xianglian, visited him as he was deep in thought, and revealed that she had become elected for inheritor of the holy mirror Dvapara-Yuga. But she also divulged the details of a conversation she had overheard: that only two of the treasures still existed at the temple, because the Krita-Yuga had been stolen years ago by her biological father and that the monks had been hiding this the entire time. She had been nominated for the Dvapara-Yuga instead, because she had told the master of the temple that she felt unworthy to inherit the Krita-Yuga, considering her family history, and her selfless reflection was a prominent feature of her inheritance of Dvapara-Yuga. However, the night before the succession ceremony, the Evil Seed came down on the temple, and an evil presence overwhelmed the inhabitants. Sensing the evil, the monks who were preparing for the ceremony immediately transferred ownership of the holy artifacts to Kilik and Xianglian. Minutes later, everyone in the temple lost their sanity except Xianglian. With madness combined with his great skills, Kilik killed many temple members as everyone fought one-another. Xianglian realized the power of the mirror and slung it around Kilik's shoulder, causing him to regain his sanity as she lost hers. When Kilik had completely regained his senses, he realized that the monks had slaughtered each other. He tried to leave, but the only other known survivor, Xianglian, blocked his way, now totally corrupted by the Evil Seed, and attacked him. He tried to avoid hurting her, but was forced to kill her in self-defense.
An old man, the Edge Master—adviser and teacher of the Ling-Sheng Su martial arts—found Kilik's unconscious body in the temple. He set the corrupted temple on fire and carried Kilik home. After two days, Kilik finally awoke, and Edge Master told him the truth: Kilik and Kali-Yuga had been infected with the Evil Seed, the source of which was the demonic sword, Soul Edge. The only thing protecting his sanity was the Dvapara-Yuga, and he could never remove the holy mirror from his shoulder at any time. Wrought with grief that his life had come at the sacrifice of Xianglian's, Kilik trained with Edge Master for three years, trying to learn to control the evil within himself and Kali-Yuga. Once his training was complete, Edge Master gave him the final test of destroying the Soul Edge, and Kilik embarked on that quest to purify himself and his weapon.
On his journey, Kilik traveled to an Indian Port to request a pirate ship to take him where he wanted to go. He met the Japanese pirate of the Ryūkyū Kingdom, Kyam, who instantly took a liking to him, and granted Kilik's request for boarding, provided the ship's captain, Maxi, agreed when he returned. As Kilik waited for Maxi, a mysterious ship approached, which resulted in an attack, led by Astaroth. Maxi returned and Kilik assisted him during the attack. Astaroth managed to remove Dvapara-Yuga, causing Kilik to lose sanity and attack Maxi. Maxi suppressed Kilik long enough to put Dvapara-Yuga back on him and they continued to fight, but every member of Maxi's crew was left dead, and Maxi decided to aid Kilik in his quest. Later, the two met Xianghua, a member of the Ming Dynasty Imperial Guard, who aided them in their travels. (Although neither Kilik nor Xianghua knew that Xianglian was her long-lost sister.) With Maxi and Xianghua's help, Kilik stormed Ostrheinsburg Castle and defeated Nightmare, although Maxi was thought to be killed and the Dvapara-Yuga was destroyed. Kilik figured out he had learned to control the demonic powers within him and Kali-Yuga as he kept his sanity after Dvapara-Yuga was destroyed.
After Nightmare's defeat, Xianghua and Kilik were challenged by the demonic entity, Inferno, within a demonic void. Kilik was too weak to fight, so Xianghua fought in his stead. During the battle, her keepsake Tai Chi jian transformed into the holy sword, Soul Calibur, allowing her to defeat Inferno. In the end, however, she was forced to leave the sword behind in order to drag Kilik to safety as the void collapsed.
Soulcalibur II[]
Afterward, Kilik returned alone to Edge Master's hermitage, continuing to perfect the technique of neutralizing and purifying evil energy. Four years later, he sensed the return of Soul Edge, and set out on another journey to defeat Soul Edge once and for all, so that he could atone for the sins he committed the night of the fateful Evil Seed. Along the way, he encountered Xianghua again. They argued over their difference of opinions (namely, they both argued that it was their duty to destroy Soul Edge this time), but they still traveled together in the end.
Soulcalibur III[]
While purifying a town infected with evil, the two encountered Zasalamel. Kilik engaged Zasalamel in battle, but lost. Before he lost consciousness, Kilik heard Zasalamel tell him that if he challenged Soul Edge unprepared, he would be trapped in its dark abyss. He awoke a month later in Edge Master's hermitage, carried there by Xianghua. Sensing a terrible energy within his wounds, Edge Master had performed a special ritual to treat them. Kilik realized that he would not be able to seal Soul Edge with his current strength. Thinking to himself, he placed his hand on his chest and realized that the fragment of the Dvapara-Yuga was gone.
Edge Master then ordered Kilik to begin training. He surrounded himself in a dark aura, similar to a person affected by the Evil Seed. Armed with only the Kali-Yuga, Kilik realized that his target should be the evil energy within Edge Master. Within three months, Kilik managed to strike Edge Master with a purifying blow, enough to free his teacher's mind, but at the same time, seriously injuring him.
Edge Master told Kilik that even though he still lacked skill, and that a pure spirit strikes only at evil without harming the body, he noted that Kilik had made good progress in a short time. He handed Kilik another fragment of the Dvapara-Yuga and a letter from Xianghua. She wrote that she would improve on her skills and regain her courage, and she believed that together, they would be able to destroy Soul Edge. With these words, Kilik set out west to once again pursue the evil.
Soulcalibur IV[]
After finishing his training, Kilik realized that Soul Calibur was an entity that was no different from Soul Edge. Their powers had to be balanced so they could eliminate each other.
He and Xianghua had been traveling together for quite some time. He knew that she had feelings for him, as he had feelings for her, but he could not return them because she looked almost exactly like Xianglian, the woman whom he looked up to as an older sister. Every time Xianghua smiled at him, he was reminded of the fact that he murdered Xianglian with his own two hands.
As the two of them got nearer to the cursed city of Ostrheinsburg, Kilik planned on leaving Xianghua when the time was right. He convinced himself that he must bring balance between the two swords.
Soulcalibur V[]
The light of the moon filtered through a single window. A smile gracing his lips, Kilik caressed the cheek of the sleeping Xianghua one more time and layed down his cherished pendant beside her; the stone that was a keepsake of his elder sister.
Surrendering to his destiny, he had decided to interfere in the battle of the source of evil, Soul Edge, and the spirit sword, Soul Calibur, to find a way to stop them. It is a harsh path; one where he must abandon all. He lamented it for the young woman who loved him dearly, Xianghua. She had accepted Kilik and his terrible fate entirely, embracing him, wanting to be together no matter what...
"It's because you have accepted me, that I can live with my destiny."
Before the stroke of dawn, there was no longer any remaining trace of Kilik. To atone for his own crimes, he will protect the world of his beloved. These were all events at the end of the 16th Century.
During all that time he spent trying to close the astral gates, Kilik touched the memories of the souls that wander Astral Chaos which allowed him to learn both their styles and that of those who defeated them. The weapons were apparently re-materialized with the help of the "power of chaos".
Soulcalibur: Unbreakable Soul[]
(Non-canon)
At the Coliseum, Kilik and Maxi are fighting in a tournament. When they encounter the player and Cassandra, Kilik immediately becomes hostile when he senses Soul Edge's power within the player. He fights him/her, but is defeated. It is then that Xianghua arrives and clears up the misunderstanding, and Kilik apologizes for attacking the player.
In Other Characters' Storylines[]
Following the events of Soulcalibur IV, Maxi was informed by Edge Master that Kilik would need to pass the Kali Yuga to Xiba in order to protect his soul. This was actually completed before the events of Soulcalibur V and since then the close-knit group of Maxi, Kilik and Xianghua have separated. While Maxi now travels with Xiba, Natsu, and Leixia, Kilik followed in his master's footsteps and has, as he puts it himself, "reached enlightenment."
He also purified Voldo during the events of Soulcalibur IV, shattering Soul Edge's delusion that Voldo was serving.
Profile[]
Soulcalibur[]
Kilik, raised at the Ling-Sheng Su Temple deep within China, was chosen to inherit a rod called "Kali-Yuga" after many years of training. This weapon was one of the three sacred treasures of the temple.
However, the Evil Seed had rained down upon the temple and caused its people to lose their sanity and a blood bath ensued.
Kilik was able to keep his sanity under the protection of the "Dvapara-Yuga," but was forced to defend himself against those who were under the spell of the Evil Seed. In doing so, he killed his sworn sister and others dear to him.
When Kilik regained consciousness, the old man who saved him told him the truth. Kilik and the Kali-Yuga were both still under the demonic influence of the Evil Seed. The only thing that separated Kilik from madness was the Dvapara-Yuga slung around his shoulder. And the source of all this evil was the demonic blade Soul Edge!
Kilik trained under the old master, and after learning how to control the evil within himself and the Kali-Yuga, embarked on a quest to purify himself and his weapon.
Chapter I: Awaken Destiny[1]
The Ling Sheng Su Temple rested on a quite mountain deep in the interior of China. This temple is considered to be the finest school for the sword and rod arts. Many heroes of history have come from this great temple and to this day the monks here are still strong. Up until 10 years ago the temple had very little communication with the outside world. But one-day, robbers raided the neighboring town and the monks opened their doors and saved the village. Now the great temple accepts anyone regardless of age or gender, so long as they have a strong fighting spirit. Since then it has been customary for the children of soldiers to visit the temple to brush up their skills and the farmers and merchants to come to the temple to learn some basic techniques to protect themselves from robbers.
In the main hall of the Ling Sheng Su Temple there were three sacred weapons call the Kali-Yuga, the Krita-Yuga and the Dvapara-Yuga. No one knew why the treasures were kept there, the reasons stretch far beyond recorded history and the monks of the temple have strictly enforced the rules.
One winter day a baby was found deserted in front of the Ling Sheng Su Temple. Despite weeks of searching the child's parents could not be found and thus the baby was named "Kilik" and adopted by the temple. Kilik grew up healthy and trained himself with the monks and pupils of the temple in the ways of the rod from a very young age. He also had a sworn elder sister named Xianglian. She too was adopted by the temple and there she studied the art of the sword. She felt close to Kilik since they were both orphans and she loved him as a younger brother.
Years passed and Kilik grew into a strong and healthy youth. By natural talent or not Kilik mastered art of the rod taught from Master Han and became one of the school's finest students. With his skill and warm personality he was able to serve as one of the school's teachers. Thus it was natural that he would be nominated to be the successor of the Ling Sheng Su style rod at the succession ceremony held once every 20 years. At the ceremony he would be granted the Kali-Yuga, on of the three scared weapons of the temple. As the successor his status in the temple would be raise atop the rod school as the most skilled student in the temple.
The cool wind of the night was gently blowing. Kilik couldn't sleep and sat on the stone wall behind the main hall and looked up into the moon lit sky. This was Kilik's favorite place within the temple. When he was a child he used to come here and look into the stars each time his heart was sad. Suddenly he sensed a new presence behind him, there stood Xianglian. She too was elected to be one of the successors of the treasures, the Dvapara-Yuga. As they talked they remember many old memories; this place was special to both of them.
Why did Xianglian, master of the sword, succeed the Dvapara-Yuga and not the Krita-Yuga?
Kilik finally asked her the question that had troubled his mind for so long. Xianglian quietly replied that there were only two of three treasures currently in the temple and that the Krita-Yuga had been lost over ten years ago.
The scared weapons had been a spiritual goal for the students of the temple. In days of turbulence, such as attacks by robbers, the thought of losing one of the treasures would have been a great moral damage to the temple. Thus the fact that the Krita-Yuga was missing was strictly taboo and only a few of the highest-ranking monks knew about it. They knew they had to hide the fact that the Krita-Yuga was missing and more over the thief was non other than a high ranking monk of temple once nominated to be the successor of the Kali-Yuga!
Surprised to hear one of the three treasure had been lost, Kilik stood shocked as Xianglian continued her tale. "Those are not all the facts, I am not worthy the succeed the art of the sword because the thief of the Krita-Yuga is… no other than… my father."
She learned of this when she overheard a conversation between the school's masters. Master Han was aware Xianglian had heard and said to her gently, "You have no connection to these facts, cut your own path in life and never let the act of your parents rule you."
At the time Xianglian was too young to understand but as she grew she understood the words of the master. However she still felt she had no right to be the successor of the art of the sword. If she did succeed and people discovered the truth they would not except her. And Xianglian herself did not wish to be the successor. This was her decision after long and deep thought on the matter and Master Han understood her choice and nominated her to be the successor of the mirror. The skills need to be the successor of the mirror were not natural fighting talent but the power of a pure soul and a strong mind. In those areas she was more than strong enough.
Silence fell on the couple as their thoughts reflected on understanding the other's situation. The cool night breeze grew cold as they began to stand to leave for a good night's rest. They suddenly felt the moonlight grow stronger and looked into the sky and saw a beautiful display of lights covering the sky. But some how the couple sensed the evil within the light and ran to a nearby hall. Deep in the hall lay the shrine for the sacred treasures. Some priests in the hall were preparing for tomorrow's ceremonies when they felt the evil presence and handed Kilik and Xianglian the Kali-Yuga and the Dvapara-Yuga to fight the evil.
It all began some hours before in the land of Spain when a young mercenary carelessly touched the forbidden evil sword Soul Edge. At that moment Soul Edge lost it inner balance, expelled its evil will and scattered the Evil Seeds of disaster all over the world!
A part of that evil energy reached across the continent to this mountain village and fell upon the temple. It forced pure evil into the people of the temple, driving them mad with rage as they started killing each other.
Poisoned by the Evil Seed, Kilik also went berserk with one of the three treasures in his hands. He was so strong he defeated many people and still relentlessly fought on. Only Xianglian with the Dvapara-Yuga on her shoulder could escape the evil influence. Realizing the power of the mirror she tried to get close to Kilik to place the mirror on him but the people of the temple seized by the Evil Seed savagely attacked her.
When his senses returned Kilik had no memory of what had happened. Though he remained confused he was forced to fight his attackers in order to survive. His master who rescued and raised him, the friends he had trained with, his own students, everyone attacked Kilik or ruthlessly killed each other. Kilik's words never reach them, tired and confused by the madness Kilik tried to escape from the temple. But just then Kilik sensed a bloodthirsty presence behind him, he raised his rod in defense and saw a sight he had hoped never to see. Xianglian had turned into a puppet of madness; Kilik desperately repelled her attacks that held strength clearly beyond any woman's. He was exhausted, his consciousness was fading and then he closed his eyes and moved without thought. A moment later he felt a pain on his left check and a response in his hands. The something warm trailed down the rod and covered his hands. He opened his eyes reluctantly and in horror gaze upon the Kali-Yuga piecing the heart of Xianglian.
"AHHHHHHHHH…!!!!", a sad cry echoed in the darkness of night. He remembered nothing after that.
As the sky began to turn gray from the east a figure stood in the now silent temple. The old man remained calm despite the mountains of death and rivers of blood that fell upon his eyes. He found Kilik laying alone unconscious. The old man set fire to the once great temple and carried Kilik to his home.
Kilik had been asleep for two days and now awoke in an unfamiliar house. He found his body covered in scares and signs that his wounds had been cared for but he couldn't summon the strength to move. He realized the old man sitting in front of him had taken care of him despite not knowing who he was.
The man told Kilik that he was the adviser to the Ling Sheng Su arts of fighting and that he was in charge of teaching the secret arts of the Ling Sheng Su style. He told Kilik that he could never take the Dvapara-Yuga off his shoulder no matter what might happen. The old man told a silent Kilik that he must concentrate on healing his body and nothing more.
Time has passed and Kilik recovered the ability to walk. One night he looked up into the southern sky, the nightmare of that night returned to his mind.
Kilik couldn't bear his life. Though he had to defend himself he felt the weight of guilt bearing down on him, he who had killed the people that raised him as an orphan, his master, his comrades whom he shared joy and sorrow and most of all his beloved Xianglian.
"I do not deserve life…" Kilik wanted to die. But, how strange it was. He fought desperately for the chance to live then and yet the pain of living was more than he could bear. Then Kilik suddenly realized, "Why was the Dvapara-Yuga on me when Xianglian had placed it on her shoulder? If I survived because of the power of the mirror, then Xianglian must have gave her own life to entrust me with the mirror. She gave me life… TELL ME SISTER WHY MUST I LIVE!?"
"Time will give you the answer." The old man told an agonized Kilik.
From that night the old man broke his silence and began the story. The true source of the tragedy at the temple was known as the "Evil Seed". In fact as they spoke evil spirits possessed both Kilik and the Kail-Yuga, but the power of the Dvapara-Yuga suppressed the evil and protected them. If the mirror was removed from Kilik he would be seized with evil and run berserk just as the people of the temple had. If the Dvapara-Yuga was removed form Kilik's body, Kilik would turn completely evil. If the Kali-Yuga was separated from Kilik it too would cause disasters, therefore Kilik and the two ancient treasures could never be separated. Then the old man told the legend of the evil sword, "Soul Edge".
"You must live as I once did." The eyes of the mentor shined deeply as if he could foresee everything.
Kilik decided to train himself under the old master. As Kilik trained hard to master the secret arts of the Ling Sheng Su style rod and three years passed quickly. He learned to control himself and the Kali-Yuga to stop the possession.
"I order you to your final trial."
The final trial was a journey to purify himself in the west.
"Everything is waiting for you in the west." With the final word of the master, Kilik left the hermitage to begin his quest.Soulcalibur II[]
Kilik was to be the successor of one of the three sacred treasures of Ling-Sheng Su Temple, called Kali-Yuga.
Tragically, the night before the succession ceremony, a mysterious light fell upon the temple, driving all those who saw it into an insane, murdering frenzy. Kilik was no exception, and he killed many temple members because of his strength.
At the end of the atrocity, the Dvapara-Yuga, second of the three sacred treasures of Ling-Sheng Su Temple, hung across the chest of Kilik. The Dvapara-Yuga belonged to Xianglian, a woman who had been like an older sister to Kilik.
When Kilik awoke, he found himself in an old man's hermitage. The old man revealed to Kilik that the root of this evil was a demonic sword called Soul Edge. Kilik studied the secret art of the Ling-Sheng Su style rod and left on a journey to destroy the evil blade.
With the help of Xianghua, a woman he met during his travels, Kilik succeeded in defeating the wielder of Soul Edge, Nightmare. Kilik returned to his master in order to perfect the technique of neutralizing and purifying the evil energy. But one day, he sensed a return of the malevolent aura of Soul Edge.
Soul Edge still existed! Kilik left on another journey to destroy Soul Edge once and for all, for he wished to atone for his sins.
"Man reaches, stumbles forward, painfully, mistakenly sometimes. Having stepped forward, he may slip back, but only half a step, never the full step back."
-John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath
Kilik was an orphan found abandoned on Ling-Sheng Su Mountain as an infant. The elders at the temple took him in and cared for him as their own. Martial arts became a part of his daily life from a young age, and Kilik became especially fond of fighting with the rod. By his sixteenth year, he became so proficient with the weapon that he was selected as the successor of the secret arts of the rod.
The Ling-Sheng Su Temple had three sacred treasures, one of which was a rod known as Kali-Yuga. Becoming the successor of the secret art meant that this revered treasure would eventually be passed down to him. Tragically, the Evil Seed rained down upon the temple the night before the succession ceremony.
Driven insane by the Evil Seed, the residents of the temple butchered one another in a bloody riot. An elderly man found an exhausted Kilik the following morning and saved him from imminent death. He was the lone survivor of the ordeal. The Ling-Sheng Su Temple, which had once flourished with martial arts students, was forever obliterated from the face of the earth.
When Kilik awoke, he found himself in an old man's hermitage. Along with Kali-Yuga, Dvapara-Yuga, a mirrored sash that was one of the three sacred treasures, rested on his shoulder. Dvapara-Yuga belonged to Xianglian, another orphan at the temple who had been like an older sister to him.
The Evil Seed had spun Kilik's destructive instincts out of control. When he regained his sanity, he was already wearing Dvapara-Yuga. He realized the sacred treasure must have cleansed the evil energy from his body. The only person who could have placed Dvapara-Yuga on him was Xianglian.
And he had killed her.
He had taken Xianglian's life. She would have survived had she kept Dvapara-Yuga on herself. Instead, she gave the mirrored sash to Kilik and lost her life after being overcome by madness. Why did she sacrifice herself in order to save him? And what was Kilik supposed to live for, when everyone he loved had been slain by his own hands?
After a long period of self-loathing and blame, Kilik concluded that the only thing he could do was to destroy the evil resident within him. "The root of all the evil is Soul Edge," the elderly man said. He said this as if he had been waiting for Kilik to reach this conclusion by himself. "You, along with Kali-Yuga, which absorbs spiritual energy, have been filled with evil power ever since that fateful night. Dvapara-Yuga is the only thing that maintains the balance between good and evil."
The old man, who lived alone in a remote region, turned out to be a martial arts advisor for the Ling-Sheng Su Temple.
Under the advisor's tutelage, Kilik learned the secret art of the Ling-Sheng Su style rod and techniques to control the evil energy within both Kali-Yuga and himself. In time, Kilik left on a journey to destroy the demonic sword. During his travels, Xianghua and Maxi joined Kilik on his quest.
They eventually reached Nightmare's stronghold but were surrounded by Nightmare's horde. Through Maxi's selfless actions, Kilik and Xianghua were able to slash their way through the endless waves of foes to reach Nightmare. They challenged their powerful adversary, and a fierce battle ensued. Ultimately, the power of Xianghua's Soul Calibur prevailed- they succeeded in destroying the evil blade.
Dvapara-Yuga shattered during the violent encounter against Nightmare. It was then that Kilik realized the evil within his body remained under control, even without the sacred treasure. During the long journey, he had gained the ability to suppress the demonic powers within him.
For some time, Xianghua and Kilik searched for Maxi, but could find nary a trace of the lost pirate. The two of them eventually went their separate ways- Kilik returned to his master in order to perfect the technique of neutralizing and purifying the evil energy over time.
Four years had passed since the fateful battle.
One day, Kilik sensed a malevolent aura- it had the same energy as the wicked, demonic blade. Soul Edge still existed! Merely shattering the weapon had not destroyed it. "If brute strength alone wasn't enough to destroy Soul Edge, would it be possible to absorb all of its powers into Kali-Yuga?" Kilik wondered. "Kali-Yuga can absorb any form of energy, so it should be possible to keep all of the blade's evil power under my control. Then I can try to purify it over time..."
He then realized the enormity of his plan. Four years had passed since he'd begun his training, yet he had been unable to completely purify the evil inside his body. It would take a long time to purge the colossal amount of demonic energy possessed by Soul Edge, but it did not matter- his mind was made up. Kilik was willing to make the sacrifice as a means to atone for the deaths he caused.
Even if it took an entire lifetime.[2]Soulcalibur III[]
In-game Profile
On his journey to purify the cursed sword, Kilik ran into Xianghua, and the two of them once again traveled together.
One day, the two of them arrived at a city that was enveloped in an evil energy that was not Soul Edge. Kilik did not know its source, but he and Xianghua worked together using the power of the fragment of Dvapara-Yuga to purify the crazed citizens.
A man bearing a large scythe appeared before them, however, and warned them to leave. Kilik did not back down, and lost in battle to the man.
"I see that you possess arts for purifying evil, but do not underestimate the cursed sword..." That was the last thing Kilik remembered hearing before he lost consciousness.
Kilik awoke to find himself in the hermitage of his teacher, Edgemaster [sic]. He had spent a month in a comatose state since Xianghua carried him here. In addition, he had lost the fragment of Dvapara-Yuga.
Kilik realized his lack of skill. He had to strengthen not only his purifying arts, but also himself...
Sensing what lay in Kilik's heart, his teacher ordered rigorous training. Kilik faced off against his teacher, who deliberately infused himself with the evil power of the cursed sword. It was Kilik's most difficult challenge. He trained with the aim of striking at only the evil energy which dwelled in his teacher's body.
After three months, Kilik finally succeeded in landing a purifying strike on his teacher. Seeing that the training was complete, Edgemaster [sic] handed to Kilik a letter from Xianghua and a new fragment of Dvapara-Yuga.
"I will work on my skills, grow stronger, and regain my courage...I'm sure that we'll meet again. And next time, let's put an end to all of this. I believe in us."
With her words in his heart, Kilik once again set off for the western lands.
Soulcalibur IV[]
His body profaned by the Evil Seed sown by Soul Edge, Kilik devoted himself to war against the cursed sword. He trained hard, mastered the art of purging evil, and took an oath to purify Soul Edge once and for all; only then could he atone for the lives he had taken while evil had ensnared his soul. If there was one answer Kilik arrived following his training, it was this: Soul Calibur was a being extremely similar to Soul Edge. The key lay in balancing the two blades' torrential power; finding a way that their opposing mights would cancel each other out.
Kilik had been traveling with Xianghua since reuniting with her during his quest. He knew Xianghua had feelings for him, but he could not return those feelings. Something about Xianghua reminded him of Xianglian, the woman he had once loved as an older sister. Each of her smiles only brought back memories of his past, of when he had murdered Xianglian with his own hands.
From this Kilik took resolve. As the Conciliator, he faced a brutal road ahead. He must find and maintain just the right equilibrium to keep the scales from tipping toward one great force or the other forever.
(I cannot involve Xianghua in the fate I have chosen for myself.)
The two drew ever closer to Ostrheinsburg, the final battleground. Yet Kilik was determined to move on alone when the time came,
“Kilik?” Xianghua called, but he did not hear.
His body having once been profaned by the Evil Seed sown by Soul Edge, Kilik devoted himself to war against the cursed blade. With the help of Xianghua and the spirit sword she held, he had emerged victorious once; but in the several years since, Soul Edge had regained its power and yet again threatened the world. Still, Kilik had not idled those years away either; having trained hard and mastered the art of purging evil, he had taken an oath to purify Soul Edge once and for all. Only then could be atone for the lives be took while evil had hold of his soul.
If there was one answer Kilik arrived at, after witnessing the battle beeween the spirit sword and cursed sword firsthand—and after probing the evil essences within his own body as he tempered his mind—it was this: Soul Calibur was a being extremely similar to Soul Edge. While their alignments differed, that was all; their essential natures were the same. Though known as a “spirit sword”—a force for good—it would take ane one malicious wielder with a will stronger than the sword’s to bend the blade toward evil. Yet, the converse must also hold true. The key lay in balancing the two blades’ torrential power, finding the one point where their opposed mights would cancel each other out, stemming the flood to create waters calm as a mirror.
Since entering Europe, Kilik had been aware of several pursuers on their tail. Who they were, be could not say, but he had no desire to involve others in this battle, least of all those in ignorant pursuit of one blade or the other. He had done his best to keep himself and his companion hidden...
“Kilik! Xianghua called again. This time her sharper tone gave Kilik a start.
“Oh. Sorry, I was lost in thought.”
“Well, just as long as you're on your toes when it counts. For my sake,” she added with a smile. Kilik had been traveling with Xianghua since reuniting with her during his quest to find the cursed sword. She herself had once clutched the other blade, Soul Calibur, but remained unaware of the spirit sword’s dangers.
Kilik was slow, but not stupid; he knew Xianghua had feelings for him. For his part, he felt a warm sentiment torward her that undeniably lent calm to his heart. But his affection for her was much closer to the attachment one feels toward a blood relative. Something about Xianghua—though he could not explain exactly what—reminded Kilik of Xianglian, the woman he had once loved as an older sister. And perhaps seeing Xianglian in Xianghua was what prevented him from perceiving her as a woman in her own right; for train as he may, temper his mind as he might, he could never erase the pain in his heart. Each of Xianghua's smiles only brought back memories of his past, of when he murdered Xianglian with his own hands.
From this Kilik took resolve. As the Conciliator, he faced a brutal road ahead. Could he find and maintain just the right equilibrium to keep the scales from tipping toward one great force or the other? He believed he could, if he made full use of the evil infesting his body. His mentor, Edge Master, had lived an eternity that way. Why not Kilik as well?
He cast a glance to Xianghua, who stood at his side. She flashed a speculative smile in return.
(I cannot involve Xianghua in the fate I have chosen for myself.)
And then there was Maxi. Kilik thought of his old traveling companion. He had not seen Maxi since their parting in India. A strong man like him would not readily give in to Soul Edge’s charms; he must have had his reasons. What was be doing now? Beneath these dark skies, it was almost as if Kilik could make out his friend’s figure in pursuit of that faintest light: vengeance.
One night, the two caught sight of a meteor shower falling westward. Within the stunning lights, they could sense Soul Edge’s evil energy, and knew they must make haste on their quest. Ostrheinsburg, the final battleground, drew ever closer. Yet Kilik was determined to move on alone when the time came; he would cast away the happiness of humanity and become a part of nature. Never again would the spirit sword an the cursed sword cast their shadows on the human realm. He knew this was the only way to protect those dear to him.[3]Soulcalibur V[]
The moonlight silently filtered in through the window as Kilik caressed Xianghua's cheek. The beautiful girl appeared to be smiling in her sleep as Kilik quietly placed a necklace bearing a blue stone on the pillow next to her. Kilik had always carried the necklace around as a memento of his adoptive sister, Xianglian, but tonight he would leave it next to the other cherished treasure he intended to leave behind.
Twenty-four years ago, the Evil Seed rained dark energy down upon Ling-Sheng Su Temple, driving Kilik into a mad frenzy that ended in the death of everyone at the temple, including Xianglian. Kilik later learned how to control the evil within him from the timeless Edge Master. Wracked with guilt, Kilik made the decision to get involved in the conflict between Soul Edge, the source of the evil energy that had overtaken him, and the spirit sword Soul Calibur. He made this decision knowing that it would mean forgoing the simple pleasures of a normal life.
The only regret that ate at Kilik's heart was the thought of Xianghua, the woman who had accepted him as he was including his past and declared her undying love for him. She had told him that they would always be together, no matter what...
It is because you loved me that I will be able to live with my destiny.
Just before dawn, Kilik left Xianghua's side in order to atone for his crimes and shape a world in which his beloved could live peacefully.
This all transpired on a night at the end of the 16th century.[4]
Endings[]
Soulcalibur[]
Despite losing its physical form, the demonic blade still burned fiercely and prepared to scatter itself throughout the world again.
Kilik chanted quietly but with resolve, "Om Vajradharma Kilik."
The Dvapara-Yuga that protected him split apart and extinguished the evil flames.
Over the course of many intense battles, Kilik mastered the skill to tame the evil within him.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Kilik subjects himself to more intensive training.
Here, at the place where heaven and earth meet, his eyes reflect nothing but the clear blue of the boundless sky.
Soulcalibur II[]
Kilik channeled the evil energy into the Kali-Yuga, for it absorbs all spiritual energy, good and bad.
The evil aura, thought to be limitless in its power, gradually waned and vanished.
Then Kilik disappeared--perhaps to embark on a quest to extinguish the evil.
And he would likely remain on that quest, until the day when all the sins of the past are exorcised.
Soulcalibur III[]
Kilik and Xianghua were in a beautiful field. As Xianghua admired the view, Kilik showed her the grave of the woman who saved his life. Now that everything was over, Kilik wondered if they did the right thing. "Of course it was the right thing!" Xianghua said, "Besides, this is only the beginning!" As the two began to leave, Xianghua lost her balance.
Input Ending Kilik caught her, and now that they were face to face, a confused Kilik was unsure of the correct way to ask Xianghua to stay with him. "I don't know how to say this, and I don't understand it myself either, but I want you to stay with me." "That's just like you... but that's just how I want you to stay." Xianghua replied as they hugged.
No Input Ending Xianghua fell to the ground, and Kilik laughed. "You're hopeless," Xianghua said, as Kilik helped her up. Maxi then arrived and called out to them. As Xianghua and Kilik ran up to Maxi, he asked them if they were ready to go. As the three friends walked away, Xianghua pulled on Kilik's arm and said, "I'm not going to give up on you that easily!"
Secret Input Ending The secret input ending can be activated by pressing B+G instead of the normal input, A+G. The secret ending is exactly the same as the normal Input Ending, except they do not look each other in the face and hug. They turn away from each other. Dialogue is the same.
Soulcalibur IV[]
Kilik watched the defeated Algol as he realized that he was unable to control the power. "Spare me your pity. I, Algol, have no regrets." With these final words, Algol dropped Soul Edge and became covered in crystals. Kilik began to absorb all of Algol's power into his staff. As Kilik walked away from the area, he said that he would do everything he could to control this new power and that he had no other choice.
The text-only epilogue reveals this: He disappeared alone. The two powers forever rested in peace and never stirred again.
Weapons[]
Soulcalibur[]
Kali-Yuga[]
Kilik's Kali-Yuga and the Dvapara-Yuga were two of Ling-Sheng Su Temple's three sacred treasures. When the Evil Seed corrupted Kilik and Kali-Yuga with evil, the Dvapara-Yuga's power, along with Kilik's inner strength, were the only things that kept him from being completely possessed by evil.
If Kali-Yuga had fallen into the hands of someone else, this would have meant the creation of another weapon like Soul Edge.
Equipped with the rod that took the life of his sworn sister, and the mirror that she gave him along with her life, Kilik departed for the West to find answers for himself.
Soulcalibur IV[]
Kali-Yuga[]
One of the tools of war known as the Three Treasures. It was in the keeping of Ling-Sheng Su Temple, once home to a renowned line of warriors, until the temple was reduced to ruins and it came to rest in the hands of Kilik, the last of their people. The rod as the ability to store power, be it good or evil; thus both it and its wielder were filled with Soul Edge's evil when the temple was destroyed. Sensing the Kali-Yuga might turn into a second Soul Edge, Kilik began learning how to control the evil, and thus his and the weapon's destinies became intertwined.
After much training—and with the help of another of the Three Treasures, the Dvapara-Yuga—Kilik learned how to purify evil, but the malice within Kali-Yuga runs deep, and has yet to be fully expunged.[3]
Soulcalibur V[]
Ancient weaponry[]
Kilik uses a variety of fighting styles based on the memories held by the wandering souls of Astral Chaos. He possesses a multitude of weapons that were reproduced by the power of the alternate dimension, all of them rare and powerful artifacts that once served in the hands of the Hero King's most trusted warriors. Like their weapons, those warriors of old were peerless, even by today's standards.
The "Hero's Sword" once held by the Hero King and the many swords and spears of his warriors had brought peace to a war-torn world. But the Hero King that had awakened after centuries of sleep was not the same person he used to be. Instead of bringing peace to the world once again, he intended to bring despair and destruction. How fortunate that fate would arm Kilik with the very weapons that once aided the Hero King whom Kilik is determined to defeat![4]
Kali-Yuga[]
Kali-Yuga is one of the three treasured weapons that was once protected by the monks of the Ling-Sheng Su Temple. Kilik used the treasured rod to shut the gates to Astral Chaos time and again, but it was Kali-Yuga's nature to absorb power, whether good or evil. As a result, Kali-Yuga was gradually filled with the chaotic energy seeping out of Astral Chaos.
Should Kilik ever give in to the evil energy emanating from Kali-Yuga, he would become a Malfested and lose his mind, at which point Astral Chaos would swallow him up. Kilik knew that if he allowed that to happen, Kali-Yuga would rain devastation upon the world as a second Soul Edge.
Yet Kilik had no choice but to confront the gates of Astral Chaos every time they opened, at least until someone worthy came along to inherit Kali-Yuga and Kilik's fateful duty...[4]
Fighting Style[]
Kilik is a martial artist with a Staff as his weapon. The length of his Staff allows a multitude of long range attacks and accordingly Kilik is most effective at this distance. However if an opponent does manage to get very close to Kilik he does have tools to employ; the most effective of these are his fast horizontal strikes. He also has some auto-guard impact moves that can be used to interrupt strings and possibly deter opponents from using constant offense. Many of Kilik's more powerful attack strings are vertical hits that can be sidestepped if anticipated. Although linear, these powerful attacks Kilik possesses are relatively fast and deal great damage. It is for this reason that Kilik excels to a great degree more than most versus ignorant players. Kilik has a diverse array of low attacks, some slow and heavily damaging, some fast and hard to react to. Two of his throws (Festival of the Damned and Festival of the Dead) are regarded as hardest to perform, but allows for great ring out potential. Kilik is generally regarded by the Soulcalibur tournament community as being in the top to mid-tier brackets.
Soulcalibur IV[]
Ling-Sheng Su Secret Arts of the Rod[]
Edge Master, the famous sword monk. This old man was headed to Ling-Sheng Su Temple as a military advisor. The "Three Treasures" had been stored there from some time ago.
The Krita-Yuga (sword), The Kali-Yuga (staff), and the Dvapara-Yuga (mirror). All those who train at the Ling-Sheng Su Temple one day hope to inherit one of these. They are, in all ways, the very highest form of sword technique and staff technique that exists in the world.
The Three Treasures each find their own inheritors who come to the holy place to study the secret arts under the sword monk The inheritor of the Staff Arts was Kilik. As the only survivor of Ling-Sheng Su Temple, he faces his own destiny.[3]
Soulcalibur V[]
In Soulcalibur V, Kilik no longer has a unique moveset (with his weapon and style now being inherited by Xiba). Instead, he switches between random movesets from each of the male characters (with the exception of Ezio, Algol and Devil Jin) every round, similar to Edge Master (who mimics the whole roster except for the aforementioned Ezio, Algol, and Devil Jin) and Elysium (who only mimics female characters). While he uses the same weapons as Edge Master (The Master), he resumes use of the Kali-Yuga when using Xiba's style, and one of his iconic attacks from previous Soulcalibur games, which is Wind Divide Flare (notation 22AAA)
Memories of Astral Chaos[]
Starting 17 years ago, the gates to Astral Chaos began opening with growing frequency.
Kilik recognized the dangers posed by the astral gates, which brought unbalance to the world with every appearance. Using the power of Kali-Yuga, Kilik had managed to close the gates numerous times.
As Kilik continued his solitary vigil, each interaction with the astral gates forged a temporary link between Kilik and the lost souls within Astral Chaos. Through these links, Kilik inherited the fighting techniques that the souls had known in life, or the techniques that had ended that life.
This growing knowledge also acted as an indication that Kilik's own body was slowly being infected by the power of Astral Chaas, and that he would eventually melt into the rush of chaos flowing through the alternate dimension. Kilik's fighting abilities evolved beyond that of any single man, even though he knew his chosen path would lead him to the "void", a world where even his soul would not leave a trace.[4]
Critical Finish[]
Ling Sheng Su: Dynastic Phoenix: Kilik prepares his Critical Finish with the words "Ling-Sheng Su Bo." He kicks and jabs his opponent to the ground with his rod. Then, he jumps high up in the air with the cry of a phoenix, saying "this is the end !", and he slams his rod onto the opponent, causing golden feathers to suddenly appear. He ends by saying, "Nothing personal."
