Maxi (マキシ, also written as 真喜志), is a character in the Soul series. He appeared in the game Soulcalibur VI, which marks his debut appearance in the new, rebooted Soulcalibur timeline.

His nickname is Dandy of the Seas.

Biography

Soulcalibur VI

Maxi's father had worked in the Ryukyu Kingdom as a merchant. Though fortunate enough to be able to experience different cultures on his trade route, he nevertheless felt tied down to his job, and would complain bitterly to his son. On his deathbed, he told Maxi to go out and see the world. Obeying his father's dying wishes, Maxi gathered friends from his hometown and some sailors he knew, and formed a pirate crew. A master of his native Ryukyu's martial arts, Maxi stood as a respected and trusted leader. He and his crew set sail, vowing never to be shackled by the whims of trade, and instead to relish the taste of freedom.

Though Maxi and his crew considered themselves pirates, they were not the barbarians one might expect. (Granted, some of their activities weren’t exactly lawful, and neither were they ones to shy away from a fight…) While the “fake Soul Edge” incident was admittedly a turn for the worse, it ended up proving just how capable Maxi and his crew really were. While facing similar adventures on their journey, they made their way by sea to India. What Maxi did not realize, however, was that fate had a cruel surprise in store...

Main Story

At an Indian port, Maxi was away from his crew when they were attacked by Astaroth and a swarm of Lizardmen. When he returned, he found his entire crew slain, and was informed by a dying Kyam to get the Dvapara-Yuga back onto Kilik to return the monk to his senses, and to take him West. Knowing that Astaroth would return for Kilik, Maxi swore to take his revenge.

As they started their journey together, Maxi and Kilik were confronted by Mitsurugi, who mistook the pirate as another nunchaku wielder who wanted the samurai dead. After Maxi won, he and Kilik were warned by Mitsurugi about Taki and her connections to Soul Edge. After taking Xianghua in as another companion, the three of them gathered information about the Schwarzstrom to prepare themselves for the inevitable battle.

As they drew closer to Ostrheinsburg, the trio were confronted by Astaroth. Wanting to battle the golem to avenge his crew, Maxi had Kilik and Xianghua continue on ahead with Grøh. He was able to defeat Astaroth, but was slashed in the back by the golem. After delivering the final blow to Astaroth, Maxi collapsed from his wounds.

Libra of Soul

Before the events of the Main Story, Maxi met the Conduit and helped them fight against the vanguard of the Qualifiers. He then took the Conduit to southern part of the Ming Empire, but after his ship was badly damaged along the way, Maxi parted ways with the Conduit to repair his ship.

Physical Appearance

Maxi retains his iconic appearance with his black hair having a right side bang, tan skin, and well-toned chest.

Personality

Maxi can be described as being adventurous and eager for a fight. In his story mode, he is shown to be easily gullible to attractive women, but this turned out to be a farce as he was using Lyla's connections to have one of his crew mates to forge a nunchaku out of the best material. Maxi regards his crew like his family, which made him swore revenge against Astaroth for killing them.

Costumes

Maxi's outfit is his signature jacket and pants, with his chest exposed. His Color 1 is his iconic white outfit with a purple sash under his belt.

His Color 2 has his hair blonde, his outfit blue, and his sash orange.

His Color 3 also has his hair blonde, his outfit pinkish red, and his sash yellow.

His Color 4 has his hair dark red and slightly messy, his outfit black, and his sash red.

Weapon & Style

Powerful and painful nunchaku combos are the name of the game. Its myriad special stances allow for a number of unique combos whose movements are difficult to predict. Smart usage of its Seven Stars Rebirth (4 or 6 while in a special stage) to change stances can make this style even more potent in the right hands.

Fatibal

Nunchaku made by Yagaji, one of Maxi’s crew. Designed to complement the pirate leader’s fighting style and natural strength, they provide excellent speed, and break less easily than his other nunchaku.

During his time on land, Yagaji crafted many different versions of these nunchaku. Only after a great deal of effort was he was able to create a set sturdy enough to withstand the strength with which Maxi wields them.

On one particular journey he purchased some high-quality East Indian rosewood from a female merchant, specifically so he could make these nunchaku. Perhaps Yagaji’s finest work, they fit Maxi’s fighting style perfectly and are his weapon of choice.

Shissen Karihadi

The Ryukyu Kingdom is the birthplace of many martial arts, one of which use of nunchaku, an unusual weapon consisting of two wooden rods connected by a chain. The fighter takes hold of one rod and swings the other, using centrifugal force to land powerful blows. Once one rod strikes, it can be grabbed, and the other rod swung again to create an unending blizzard of blows. nunchaku are extremely difficult to wield, but those willing to put the effort in to learn them—like Maxi—are able to rain pain upon their opponents.

The name Shissen roughly translates to “seven flashes,” with seven representing the number of shapes the nunchaku can make, and flashes representing the speed in which blows are dealt to the opponent. The basics of the Shissen Karihadi style come from the Ryukyu Kingdom style, but it also adopts moves from other styles. Most notably, Maxi uses variations on moves learned from one Zhang Wu—a martial artist from the Ming Empire whom he met on board his father’s ship—with (of course) his own flair mixed in.

Critical Edge

Raging Dragon Zodiac: Hits his opponent multiple times with his nunchucks. He throws his nunchaku into the air and delivers a fiery punch to his opponent as a final blow and catches his nunchaku .
