Profile[]
An elderly swordsman living in Omi Province. He is known in town as the leader of a dojo, but his true identity is Gekkyusai Kokonoe, younger brother of the previous head of the Kokonoe clan, Danjo Kokonoe. He has a particularly strong spirit even for a Kokonoe warrior, a trait that allowed him to become a master of Zanki, a move that none had mastered for many generations. On the other hand, his skill in battoujyutsu was very poor; to his great shame, not only did he pale in comparison to his older brother, he even ranked lower than some of the disciples.
When Danjo took the headship of the main Kokonoe faction, Sakan became leader of the Hidden Kokonoe. However, he could not agree with the Hidden Kokonoe's ever-increasing ambition, nor could he stand the delusional training methods they used to produce warriors with superhuman abilities. As leader, he tried to end the animosity between the two factions, but instead, he was scorned and disdained for his lack of skill. Many branch members of the clan saw his poor swordsmanship and claimed the Hidden Kokonoe had fallen. They were but words of jealousy, but they were enough to prod Sakan's insecurities, clouding his heart.
This resentment eventually reached a boiling point, leading to a tragedy wrought by Sakan's own hand. He had a son with a woman he had been meeting in secret, but in a fit of cruelty he decided to hand his child over to the "curse" of the Hidden Kokonoe. The mother took her own life a few years later, leaving Sakan with only words of reproach. It wasn't until then that Sakan noticed how twisted he had become. He then left his life as a warrior and turned to Buddhism, changing his name to Sakan Inobe.
Yet Sakan's heart would still know no peace—perhaps because he had grown up near a Buddhist temple, learning Zen teachings. What finally brought light to his darkness were the teachings of a religion that had only just arrived in Japan: Christianity. His suffering now eased, Sakan chose to atone for his sins by taking in an orphan of mixed blood, whom he named Anju.
Anju later passed away, leaving Sakan alone once more. After Shugen, who was close to Anju, abandoned the Kokonoe clan, Sakan decided to leave on his own journey. He passed through many lands while relying on the help of old friends, and finally put his roots down in Omi Province, far away from the Omura clan's domain.
