Soulcalibur VI (ソウルキャリバーVI, Sourukyaribaa Shikkusu) is the seventh installment in Namco's Soul series of fighting games. It is a soft reboot of the series which covers events starting pre-Soulcalibur, and was announced at The Game Awards 2017. It was released on October 18, 2018.

Development[]

The game began development before 2014.[2] Like Tekken 7, Soulcalibur VI uses Unreal Engine 4. According to Bandai-Namco, Soulcalibur VI will focus more on story elements. According to the game's producer Motohiro Okubo, the game's code name in development was "Luxor" in reference to making the game feel more akin to the first Soulcalibur[3]

Characters[]

Returning Characters[]

Heishiro Mitsurugi
(御剣 平四郎)
Mitsurugi is a veteran of the Soul series that has been in every game since Soul Edge. He wears a modified version of his Soulcalibur outfit.[4]
Weapon: Katana

A fighting style that specializes in razor-sharp Japanese swords. Although viable for combat at any distance, it excels at close-range fighting. Clever use of the special fighting stances Mist and Relic can enable a wide array of offensive strategies during fights as well.

Seong Mi-na
(ソン・ミナ)
Seong Mi-na returns wielding her signature spear Scarlet Thunder. Her outfit is a hybrid of her 1P and 3P outfits from Soul Blade.[5]
Weapon: Zanbatou

A fighting style that makes heavy use of centrifugal force to make every blow hit hard. As such, it's designed to keep enemy fighters at bay from afar and not let them close the gap. It's also superb at whittling down guard stamina and breaking through enemy defenses.

Taki
(タキ)
Taki returns since her last main appearance in Soulcalibur IV. Her costume seems to be a mix of her different appearances.[6]
Weapons: Ninja Sword ×2

No other fighting style even comes close to matching this one when it comes to sheer attack speed. Barrages of attacks than can chip away at an opponent's life even as they're guarding make it highly dangerous, and rush attacks out of special stances can also quickly end a round.

Maxi
(マキシ)
Maxi returns, once again wielding his nunchaku, Fatibal. He wears a modified version of his Soulcalibur outfit.
Weapon: Nunchaku

Powerful, painful nunchaku combos are the name of the game with this fighting style. Its myriad special stances allow for a number of unique combos whose movements are difficult to predict. Smart usage of its Seven Stars Rebirth to change stances can make this style even more potent in the right hands.

Voldo
(ヴォルド)
Voldo returns wielding his katars and wearing a brand new outfit utilizes a split-design, something that was inherited from his 2P outfit from Soulcalibur III; the front half of his design is that of a squire and a man, and the back half is that of a woman and an aristocrat.[7]
Weapons: Katar (Jamadhar) ×2

Distinctive weapons wielded in both hands and bizarre, erratic moves make this style deadly and unpredictable in equal measure. Its users can launch powerful attacks with their backs turned to the enemy as their bodies contort in ways that are altogether unthinkable to most any normal fighter.

Sophitia Alexandra
(ソフィーティア・アレクサンドル)
Sophitia is the older sister to Cassandra and Lucius. She is a veteran of the Soul series and is returning since her last main appearance in Soulcalibur IV. Her outfit is based on her Soulcalibur outfit.[8]
Weapons: Short Sword & Small Shield

Moves are kept on the light side with this sword and shield fighting style. Its highly-maneuverable Angel Step can quickly cover distance, letting its users score deadly blows at close range. It also possesses a wealth of moves that can attack enemies while simultaneously repelling their strikes.

Siegfried Schtauffen
(ジークフリート・シュタウフェン)
Siegfried returns using his zweihänder once again. His outfit is based off of Nightmare's although designed to resemble a knight of justice,[9][10] with a sacred white dragon used as a motif.[11][12]
Weapon: Zweihänder

The hulking two-handed sword employed in this fighting style is used to provide superb defense by stringing together stance changes. It's no offensive slouch either, as special stances can quickly break an enemy's guard. On the off chance a user's life drops below a certain point, many of their attacks also become stronger.

Ivy
(アイヴィー)
Ivy makes her come back with her signature sword. She appears wearing a modified version of her Soulcalibur outfit.[13]
Weapon: Snake Sword

Armed with a snake sword whose shape can be changed at will, users of this long-range fighting style can deftly avoid close-quarters combat with techniques that keeps foes at bay. Equipped with powerful moves than can only be activated at a certain distance, this style is made to deal out major damage from far away.

Kilik
(キリク)
Kilik returns once again using his staff. He suffers from malfestation, being able to turn into a malfested form by using Soul Charge. His outfit is a callback to Soulcalibur, with the Dvapara-Yuga worn around his chest, and the addition of a half robe on his left side. The Fenghuang is used as a motif in his outfit.[14][15]
Weapon: Rod

The staff used by this fighting style has a long reach, but can capably respond to enemy attacks at any distance. Additionally, the vast number of defensive moves available make practitioners tough to take down. While a soul charge is active, offensive strength rises, but at the cost of the user's life being slowly drained.

Chai Xianghua
(チャイ・シャンファ)
Xianghua returns since her last appearance in Soulcalibur IV, fighting with her Chinese sword. Her attire is a blend of her outfits from Soulcalibur and Soulcalibur II.[16]
Weapon: Chinese Sword

This fighting style makes use of quick slashes dished out by a Chinese sword. Every swing flows smoothly and elegantly like a choreographed dance as they poke and prod at weak points in enemy defenses. Its Silent Xia Sheng special stance can also be used to stage confusing, unpredictable attacks on enemies.

Yoshimitsu
(吉光)
Yoshimitsu returns with a completely new look designed by Hiroaki,[17] while still donning an oni mask.
Weapons: Katana ×2

A katana, wakizashi, and strange ninjutsu constitute this unique fighting style. Although a close-ranged by nature, its users can also fly and move around the ring in the blink of an eye. They can even steal soul gauge from enemy fighters, which is used to launch powerful attacks on their weakened foes.

Nightmare
(ナイトメア)
Nightmare makes his return in the game. His appearance is an updated version of his Soulcalibur costume.[18] Once again, Siegfried Schtauffen returns as the character in the game as his face is revealed during Nightmare's armor break. Most of his armor is that of Siegfried's, albeit recolored to azure.
Weapon: Soul Edge (Zweihänder-type)

Users of this mid-range fighting style swing heavy greatswords as if they're as light as a feather. Their powerful attacks have great reach and give users numerous options for driving enemies to the edge of the ring. Plus, their revenge abilities prevent them from flinching when hit, allowing them to stay on the offensive.

Astaroth
(アスタロス)
The original axe wielding golem Astaroth, who is also Maxi’s arch-nemesis, returns. His outfit is redesigned from Soulcalibur, with snakes being used as a motif since they are the symbol of Fygul Cestemus.[19][20]
Weapon: Giant Ax

As if the giant ax isn't imposing enough, users of this fearsome style also deal massive damage when throwing enemies around. Their revenge abilities let them take hits without flinching, which they can use to close the distance to deliver crushing holds that quickly knock opponents out of commission and end a round.

Inferno
(インフェルノ)
The will of Soul Edge, returning as an unlockable character. He appears as a monstrous skeletal demon wreathed in flames, and fights using an enhanced version of the fighting style of its puppet, Nightmare.
Weapon: Soul Edge (Zweihänder-type)

The techniques employed by Inferno, Soul Edge incarnate, transcend human comprehension. High-speed unblockable moves quickly break through any enemy's defenses and revenge abilities can nullify their attacks, making this style formidable for even the most hardened warriors to face.

Cervantes de Leon
(セルバンテス・デ・レオン)
Cervantes, the infamous pirate captain of Seven Seas, the biological father of Ivy and the original known wielder of Soul Edge since Soul Blade, returns with his infamous large sword and small gun-sword Minerva. Aside his sporting a mixed hybrid between Soulcalibur II - Soulcalibur IV due to his main spectral form, he is now being given magma-like scar marks around his entire body, appearing on his body after his defeat in his first appearance, as well as through slaying his old crew after his resurrection, acting as a boost for his current form whenever it glows.
Weapons: Longsword & Pistol Sword

This dual-blade style brings together a longsword, a dagger, and a gun, letting practitioners slice, dice, and shoot their enemies full of holes in quick succession. Feats of superhuman strength like air dashes and wall kicks can bury opponents in a flash.

Raphael Sorel
(ラファエル・ソレル)
A French aristocrat who fled to Spain. His design is one that befits his aristocratic roots as well as him being a master swordsman. He has a cape with the Sorel family emblem draped over his right shoulder and he wears baroque glasses for disguise.[21][22]
Weapon: Sword Rapier

The great length of the rapier used by this style is key to its trademark piercing hit-and-run attacks. Sporting admirable reach and speed, it excels at fighting from outside an opponent's range, then lunging in with long, quick, and fatal blows when a foe leaves themselves open.

Talim
(タリム)
Talim makes her return with her signature dual Elbow Blades and her wind-oriented attacks. Her outfit is based mostly off her Soulcalibur II costume.[23]
Weapons: Elbow Blade ×2

A close-range fighting style that employs a variety of special movements that emphasize high speed, flexibility, and number of hits. This speed is used to launch surprise attacks and punish enemies when their attacks leave them exposed. Fighters in this style can use their special Wind Fury stance to deal high amounts of damage.

Zasalamel
(ザサラメール)
Zasalamel returns since his last appearance in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, using his scythe and wearing a brand new costume. He can manipulate time and has inherited some moves from his alternate form, Abyss. His outfit is inspired by his 1P outfit from Soulcalibur III. As such, it inherits many of the same motifs that his costume from that game had, such as his unique "infinite hourglass" emblem that has the sun, moon and ouroboros depicted on it; a representation of how Zasalamel himself has lived.[24][25]
Weapon: Death Scythe

This fighting style takes full advantage of the scythe's length in order to be deadly at any range. The key to victory for its practitioners calls for a unique reliance on curses to draw their enemies in, as well as magic that can stop the flow of time.

New Characters[]

Grøh
(グロー)
Grøh is a brand new character who is a part of the mysterious Aval Organization, shown wielding a double saber. He is on a mission to rid the world of "Outsiders".
Weapon: Double Sabre

Users of this style dominate mid-range fights with their long double-bladed swords. They can even split the weapon in two to use special stances in order to outwit opponents. When a soul charge is active, their maneuverability and attack strength increase so considerably that they can annihilate enemy fighters and end rounds within seconds.

Azwel
(アズウェル)
Azwel is another new character, and the antagonist of Libra of Soul. He has the ability to conjure and control numerous weapons thanks to the power of a fragment of Soul Edge and Soul Calibur fitted in each of his gauntlets.
Weapons: Bipolar Pulse-Enhancement Device

Dual swords, a giant ax, and a spear and shield can all be willed into existence with mastery of this style. These weapons are invisible until they're summoned, making attacks impossible to predict. Each weapon has its own ideal range and, after the initial summon, can be quickly recalled, making this style highly strategic in nature.

GUEST CHARACTER

Geralt
(ゲラルト)
Geralt is a witcher and the main protagonist of the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. He is based on his CD Projekt video game counterpart rather than from the original novels.
Weapons: Longsword ×2

Two longswords are wielded in this fighting style designed for use in any situation. The silver sword is particularly noteworthy, growing deadlier whenever an opponent activates a soul charge. In addition to blades, a practitioner can also use basic magic to stay on top of fights and emerge victorious.

DLC Characters[]

Season 1[]

Tira
(ティラ)
Tira returns as the first DLC character sporting a new look, mixing various costumes from Soulcalibur III to Soulcalibur V.
Weapon: Ring Blade

The fighting style of choice among assassins, its users employ a ring blade whose movements are hard to follow. It also boasts two unique battle personalities, Jolly and Gloomy, that users can switch between by meeting certain conditions. Gloomy can dominate a fight, but this style's tendency to randomly switch personalities makes it tough to control.

Amy
(エイミ)
The adopted daughter of Raphael returns as the third DLC character, sporting a completely newer look with some design elements borrowed from Soulcalibur III to Soulcalibur IV. Her fighting style has been further enhanced with new moves and roses which can be thrown to bolster her offensive and defensive capabilities.
Weapon: Sword Rapier (Small)

A fighting style that combines rapier techniques with natural instincts to exploit an opponent's openings. Armed with quick attacks, moves that help close in on the enemy, and stances that repel their attacks, this style excels at close-range combat. Hit the opponent with a rose to open them up to a powerful attack at the end of a match.

Cassandra Alexandra
(カサンドラ・アレクサンドル)
The younger sister of Sophitia returns as the final DLC character of Season 1, sporting a new look similar to some of her previous costume designs from Soulcalibur II and Soulcalibur IV, and a flashier fighting style.
Weapons: Small Shield (Weapon) & Short Sword

A close-range fighting style that utilizes a sword and shield. The shield can be used both for defense and as an offensive measure to strike the opponent. It can even be thrown. The sword can be powered up temporarily, allowing for extremely destructive attacks.

GUEST CHARACTER

YoRHa No. 2 Type B
(ヨルハ二号B型)
2B is a YoRHa android from a distant future and the main protagonist of NieR:Automata, a game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix.
Weapons: Small Sword & Large Sword

A style developed to handle any situation or foe by wielding a variety of melee armaments. Specialized movements allow a fighter to maintain a ceaseless chain of attacks before leaping up and unleashing midair combos to exploit any momentary openings. A support device called a "pod" provides assistance in launching long-range attacks and coordinated assaults.

Season 2[]

Hildegard von Krone
(ヒルデガルド・フォン・クローネ)
The defender and princess of Wolfkrone. Hilde returns in this game with a new golden armor set that was designed off of the image of a brave princess and a noble and beautiful knight in armour. The motifs used in this outfit are wolves and the lily-of-the-valley, which are both also used in the kingdom's emblem.[26] The large coat she wears was inherited from her father.[27]
Weapons: Sword and Spear

A style that incorporates both vertical attacks with a long-reaching spear and horizontal attacks with a broad-striking sword. This technique shines at mid- to long-range, with the spear serving to strike at enemy openings from any distance. You can also perform a "focused attack" by holding down a button and releasing it. If the attack hits, you can then change the course of battle with a powerful "regalia technique."

Setsuka
(雪華)
Setsuka returns in this game, sporting a new look that was was designed with the idea of blending the design of a Western swordswoman with that of a Japanese swordswoman.[28][29] Underneath her clothes are crimson cords that are fastened all over her torso and legs; these cords represent both the lustre of Japan and Setsuka's self-control.[30][31]
Weapon Umbrella (Katana hidden inside)

A sword-fighting style rooted in assassination techniques, in which the user slices at the enemy with a hidden blade faster than the eye can see. This style excels in making speedy approaches, making it possible to go on the offensive from a distance. Though it gains soul gauge more slowly than other styles, it boasts powerful attacks, and mastering combos from counter hits is the key to unlocking its full potential.

Hwang Seong-gyeong
(ファン・ソンギョン)
A Korean swordsman making a return for the first time in 15 years, with a brand new design that is a fusion of Assassin's from Soulcalibur II and early modern European military uniforms,[32] while also giving him new attacks that utilize Taoist talismans.
Weapon: Podao

A style that combines long-reaching blade attacks with agile kicks, making it best for close- to mid-range combat. Its "lifeforce techniques" drain your character's lifeforce, but can lead to high-damaging combos or trigger special effects that offer offensive boosts. Be careful, though; the more lifeforce you drain, the lower your health will be.

GUEST CHARACTER

Haohmaru
(覇王丸)
Haohmaru is a rōnin from the Tenmei era of Japan (late 18th century), and the protagonist of the Samurai Shodown series by SNK.
Weapon: Katana

A dynamic sword style using the blade Fugudoku that involves searching for an opening and, when the time is right, unleashing a single mighty strike that can cleave foes clean in half. At low health, the wielder activates Max Rage and gains access to special techniques that can change the tides of battle. The supercharged Rage Explosion grants even greater power than soul charge, allowing for blows of unmatched power.

This triggers a slow-motion exchange with a single button input from each player, with the outcome decided by a much more complicated version of rock, paper, scissors. The background music also gets louder drums while this happens.

    • Additionally, it's the first game in the series to be released on eighth-generation home consoles.
  • It is the first mainline game without default alternative costumes for characters, replacing them with palette swaps of the main costumes. However, like in Soulcalibur IV and Soulcalibur V, characters can be customized to have additional costumes.[40]
    • Unlike in previous games, due to the lack of alternate outfits, characters no longer have a 2P version of their weapons. However, some 2P weapons from older games have returned, now having a unique, distinct name.

  • The game's base roster does not have a single returning playable character that debuted in Soulcalibur IV - Soulcalibur V.
  • On November 25, 2019, a new update introduced new moves for all the characters, adding new combo possibilities and new ways to overcome difficult situations. In order to provide even more depth to the game, two new Battle Mechanics usable by all characters were also added:
  • Despite Soulcalibur VI retelling the events of the first Soulcalibur game, Rock, Edge Master, Aeon Calcos and Arthur—characters who were playable in Soulcalibur—are not playable in Soulcalibur VI. Edge Master, Aeon and Arthur do appear in the game as NPCs, and Rock is only mentioned by his nickname (the "White Giant") in the Museum.
