Prologue[]
Even the Tanegashima rifles, which he had once considered his greatest enemy, no longer concerned Mitsurugi. He had lost interest in the "ultimate weapon," Soul Edge, as well. It was at this time that Mitsurugi was attacked by forces pursuing the fragments of Soul Edge. He fended off his attackers and noticed that their garments resembled those of the female ninja who had stood in his path many times in the past. Was something happening in Japan...? Mitsurugi decided it was time to return to his homeland. It was the end of the warring-states period. The Noujima Murakami forces with whom Mitsurugi stayed upon returning had refused to submit to Toyotomi, and were preparing to make their last stand as proud men of the sea. Mitsurugi immediately agreed to join the fight and began preparations for battle.
Episode 1[]
Battle in the Strait[]
Stage 1
---
Pre-battle
At that time, Japan was being unified, and the forces that opposed that rule were putting up their final struggle. The Murakami Navy, with which Mitsurugi had once been affiliated, was also preparing a counter-attack against its enemies. Mitsurugi, known for his skill with the sword, was welcomed, and he decided to aid their battle. He thought that perhaps this battle might fill the void inside himself.
Post-battle
The operation was a success, but Mitsurugi did not feel fulfilled. Upon hearing rumors from the general that someone known as the Azure Knight was rampaging in Europe, he bid his farewell and hurried to the west. Before, when Mitsurugi had been seeking Soul Edge, he had heard rumors of a powerful man like this, but those rumors had stopped after a while. This man would surely be the one who could satisfy Mitsurugi's thirst for battle.
Episode 2[]
Lakeside Coliseum[]
Stage 2
---
"Board a ship for Europe."
Mitsurugi arrived in Rome, but he found no helpful clues. What to do now...? As he pondered his situation, he came upon an arena. He had used up the money he had earned during the battle in Japan. Additionally, the warriors gathered at the arena would likely know something that would be of use to him.
Go to Stage 4
Egyptian Temple[]
Stage 3
---
"Board a ship for Persia."
After arriving in Persia, Mitsurugi headed along the land route to Europe. Along the way, he heard a rumor that an Egyptian temple had been destroyed, and shockingly, that it had been done with a sword. Mitsurugi could not ignore the chance to meet someone that powerful. He headed to Egypt at once.
Go to Stage 5
Episode 3[]
Ostrheinsburg[]
Stage 4
---
Pre-battle
Mitsurugi learned of the Azure Knight from one of the warriors at the arena. The Knight who had once rampaged across Europe was called Nightmare, and was wreaking havoc once again. Mitsurugi headed to a castle ruin that the Knight had once used as a base. It was said that the Azure Knight had since left, but the dark aura that covered the land was still powerful. As Mitsurugi approached the castle ruins, he could sense someone or something lying in wait within...
Post-battle
The enemy slipped away from Mitsurugi and ran. For a while, Mitsurugi was on guard for a surprise attack, but he eventually sheathed his sword. The feeling of the enemy's presence had finally disappeared. In the air above, however, circled a number of black birds. He could not help but feel he was being watched. Now, what to do next...
Clock Tower[]
Stage 5
---
Pre-battle
Upon hearing that the person who had destroyed the temple was a man in blue armor, Mitsurugi was certain that it must have been the Azure Knight. His heart was swelling in anticipation of this powerful, unknown enemy. Mitsurugi crossed into Europe in search of the Azure Knight. In one city, he successfully contacted someone who was said to know of the Azure Knight. Mitsurugi headed to the clock tower that was to be their meeting place. But he had a bad feeling about it. There had to be a catch...
Event: A Trap
Post-battle
"'That sword...?' Do you mean...Soul Edge?!" "I place my curse upon you, warrior of the Far East..." Without answering the question, the man with the scythe disappeared into the dark shadows. He was a mysterious man, but one thing was certain. He knew something.
Mitsurugi followed the trail of the man with the scythe, but information about him soon dried up. It seemed he was not one to let himself be tracked so easily. However, Mitsurugi acquired knowledge of something else instead. The Azure Knight's name was Nightmare, and his sword was without a doubt Soul Edge. (Go to Stage 8)
While gathering information throughout the land, Mitsurugi confirmed that the Azure Knight was named Nightmare, and that his sword was without a doubt Soul Edge. Mitsurugi now had two new clues to follow up. The Azure Knight or Soul Edge... Which one should he look for? After thinking for a while, he came to a conclusion.
Episode 4[]
Valentine Mansion[]
Stage 6
---
"Explore the ruined castle."
In a room in the ruined castle, Mitsurugi found traces of someone who had once lived there. Following the clues, he headed to London. Seeking information about a female alchemist who wielded a "living sword," and was thought to be a follower of Nightmare, he found himself standing before a large mansion. It was said that it had been many years since the owner of this mansion had died. Mitsurugi stepped inside.
Post-battle
(If the player has not used a Continue up until that point, then the following options will appear. Otherwise, go to Stage 14)
Mitsurugi felt like he was being watched.
Old Toledo[]
Stage 7
---
"Hurry and leave this place."
Nightmare was already long gone from the castle ruins. Wandering in search of clues, in one city Mitsurugi encountered someone else who was investigating the Azure Knight. The man agreed to provide Mitsurugi with information under certain conditions. He explained that he was being spied upon. In order to capture the spy, Mitsurugi stopped to stay in the man's mansion. Several nights later, Mitsurugi cursed as he realized something was amiss. Someone had set the place on fire...
Post-battle
(If the player has not used a Continue up until that point, then the following options will appear. Otherwise, go to Stage 15)
Mitsurugi felt like he was being watched.
Eurydice Shrine[]
Stage 8
---
"Follow the man with the scythe." "Investigate Soul Edge."
Choosing to first pursue Soul Edge, Mitsurugi headed for Greece. Hephaestus, the ancient Greek god of the forge...Perhaps at the shrine of this god who was deeply connected to weaponry he might find information about the ultimate weapon, Soul Edge. A swordswoman, likely the guardian of the temple, stood before him, blocking his path.
Post-battle
(If the player has not used a Continue up until that point, then the following options will appear. Otherwise, go to Stage 16)
Mitsurugi felt like he was being watched.
Lakeside Coliseum[]
Stage 9
---
"Investigate the Azure Knight."
In Europe, the Azure Knight was well-known as a powerful warrior. To get information on a warrior, it is best to ask another warrior. Mitsurugi headed for the arena. Surely, there would be some amongst the men of strength gathered there who knew of the Azure Knight. Plus, Mitsurugi's funds were dwindling, and he could earn money at the arena. He could kill two birds with one stone.
Post-battle
(If the player has not used a Continue up until that point, then the following options will appear. Otherwise, go to Stage 17)
Mitsurugi felt like he was being watched.
Episode 5[]
Clock Tower[]
Stage 14
---
Pre-battle
From the female alchemist's words, Mitsurugi now had confirmation that Nightmare possessed Soul Edge. He then proceeded to ask about the man with the scythe who appeared to be involved. Following rumors of the man, he arrived at the clock tower of an old temple. But Mitsurugi was not at ease. He felt that he had been led here by the very one he was seeking...
Event: A Trap
Post-battle
"The Azure Knight, Nightmare, has arisen, and even now he heads east, seeking power. If you seek Soul Edge, search for him..." With these words, the man disappeared into the shadows. Deciding that he couldn't expect to find any further clues in Europe, Mitsurugi headed east.
If the player used a Continue in Stage 14, then go to Stage 18.
If the player did not use a Continue in Stage 14:
"The Azure Knight, Nightmare, has arisen, and even now he heads east, seeking power. If you seek Soul Edge, search for him..." With these words, the man disappeared into the shadows. Deciding that he couldn't expect to find any further clues in Europe, Mitsurugi headed east.
(Go to Stage 19)
Stage 15
---
Pre-battle
It seemed that the captured woman sought information about the Azure Knight, just as Mitsurugi did. But she claimed she did not start the fire. That night, a suspicious man had been seen asking about the location of people who knew of the Azure Knight. Following rumors of the man, Mitsurugi arrived at the clock tower of an old temple.
Mitsurugi had no interest in Soul Edge itself. He was only interested in powerful opponents.
Kunpaetku Shrine Ruin[]
Stage 16
---
Pre-battle
The ancient gods told him nothing, and Mitsurugi did not obtain anything of value in Greece. Perhaps the man he sought was no longer in Europe. Perhaps he had left this land in search of something, just as Mitsurugi had. Putting Europe behind him, Mitsurugi came across a new rumor in the Middle East. It was said that a black giant had destroyed the temple of a secret sect hidden in the desert. The rumor also said that the giant possessed superhuman strength.
Event: The Demon Strikes
Post-battle
After defeating the black giant, Mitsurugi found on its body what appeared to be a fragment of Soul Edge. It seemed that wherever Soul Edge was found, disaster followed. Nightmare, too, was caught in this vortex of slaughter and mayhem. Proceeding to gather rumors on recent disasters, Mitsurugi obtained two pieces of interesting information. The first was about an incident that had occurred several years beforehand, but was noteworthy for its bizarreness. The other concerned a recently sighted monster, though it had not done any harm.
Romanian Valley[]
Stage 17
---
Pre-battle
There was no one at the arena who knew the location of the Azure Knight himself, but Mitsurugi did hear something of interest. It was said that a battle was brewing in Eastern Europe. The lord of a castle had practiced the dark arts and driven an entire local city into chaos. There was also a rumor that this lord had some sort of connection to the Azure Knight. Upon actually arriving at the castle, Mitsurugi saw for himself the evil aura that surrounded it. He joined the fight.
Event: Dark Lord
If the player used a Continue on Stage 5, then go to Stage 18. If not, then go to Stage 22.
Episode 6[]
Ling-Sheng Su Temple Ruin[]
Stage 18
---
Pre-battle
Deciding that he couldn't expect to find any further clues in Europe, Mitsurugi headed east. But this time, he went by land. As he continued his journey, all the while carefully searching for rumors of the Azure Knight and any events that might be related to him, he finally encountered information that sounded promising. A temple famous for its martial arts had been destroyed in one night. It had apparently happened quite some time ago, but it was still worth investigating.
Post-battle
Mitsurugi did not find anything useful at the temple. Even more importantly, there seemed to be something wrong with his body. By the time he had realized it, it was too late. He found himself easily exhausted and his body would not recover. The words spoken by the man with the scythe flashed through his mind. "I place my curse upon you." That was what he had said when he had left. Mitsurugi swore to himself. He had to find a way to remove the curse!
Indian Port[]
Stage 19
---
Pre-battle
After entering India, Mitsurugi headed for the port city where a horde of monsters was said to have appeared and caused a massacre several years ago. Perhaps that was related to the incidents caused by Soul Edge and Nightmare. Visiting the port city, Mitsurugi got into an argument with a man. Apparently, he thought that Mitsurugi was just a tourist curious to hear the tale of the incident. For some reason, the man considered this an offense.
Go to Stage 24.
Pirate Raid[]
Stage 20
---
Pre-battle
Mitsurugi boarded a ship headed east and set out to sea. The journey started out well, but they were eventually caught in a storm. The ship quickly headed for the closest harbor. Walking out onto the deck, Mitsurugi saw the silhouette of another ship approaching through the storm. Feeling the powerful lust for battle from the master of that ship, Mitsurugi reflexively let loose a thunderous roar. At the shock of impact, the ship's hull cracked and began to break apart. Mitsurugi drew his sword.
Post-battle
The attacked ship sunk. Drifting in the sea, Mitsurugi was eventually rescued by a passing ship, one that was bound for India.
Go to Stage 24
Silk Road Ruin[]
Stage 21
---
Pre-battle
As he headed east along the Silk Road, rumors of the lizard-like figure increased. It seemed he had wound up following its trail. If he continued like this, he would surely catch up eventually. Mitsurugi didn't know yet whether or not this creature was related to Nightmare, but similar monsters had been spotted numerous times during the previous massacres caused by the Azure Knight.
Post-battle
Mitsurugi succeeded in defeating the monster, but he was unable to learn anything useful from it. If it had really been a follower of Nightmare as the rumors said, it should have had comrades, but there was no sign of them appearing. After returning to the settlement along the Silk Road, he heard rumors of an old man said to be a swordmaster, who lived deep within a steep mountain. A man of his caliber would surely know something about Soul Edge.
Go to Stage 25
Secret Money Pit[]
Stage 22
---
Pre-battle
After defeating the lord of the castle, who had been transformed into something no longer human, the tide of the battle turned immediately. The combat would soon be finished. As soon as the threat was gone, disputes began over property rights. Disgusted with those people, Mitsurugi left the battlefield. A nameless little island in the Mediterranean Sea...Upon hearing rumors that the treasure of the merchant Vercci, who was said to have once traveled in search of Soul Edge, lay hidden on this island, Mitsurugi proceeded there in search of clues.
Post-battle
Having defeated the guardian of the treasure, it now all belonged to Mitsurugi. But he had no interest in anything not related to Soul Edge. Soon, he found notes containing information that the merchant had gathered before his death. It appeared that this man never actually obtained Soul Edge.
If the player did not win the battle with a K.O:
It appeared that the information in Vercci's notes had been primarily gathered in India. Mitsurugi found the record of a man described as a "swordmaster" interesting. A warrior of that caliber would surely know something about Soul Edge. Naturally, Mitsurugi also looked forward to the opportunity to test himself against the swordmaster! Mitsurugi set off into the Himalayan Mountains where the swordmaster was said to reside.
Go to Stage 25.
If the player won the battle with a K.O:
After leaving the island, Mitsurugi heard rumors of a man claiming to be the strongest on earth. This man boasted that even Soul Edge was no match for him. If this were true, it would make him more powerful than the Azure Knight. Of course, odds were high that he was nothing more than a braggart.
Episode 7[]
Sacred Mt. Fuji[]
Stage 23
---
Pre-battle
The Ming Empire was a place of long history, and home to a great many people. Mitsurugi went there in search of a way to break his curse, but things didn't turn out so easy. To begin with, he didn't even know what kind of curse it was. He crossed over to Japan in order to calm his mind and conquer the curse. Mt. Fuji, known as the sacred mountain, would surely be an appropriate place for this. But it seemed that this method was not suited to a man who was always seeking combat...
Go to Stage 27
Lotus Garden[]
Stage 24
---
Pre-battle
In India, Mitsurugi did not gain any information regarding Nightmare, but he did learn something of interest. The "Sword of Heroes" sought by the Emperor of Ming, the great country to the east, was actually Soul Edge. Upon arriving in Ming, it seemed that the search for the sword was a secret project. He wouldn't be able to find anything by just investigating normally. Growing frustrated, he devised a plan to sneak into a military officer's mansion.
If the player wins with the timer at 39 or less, then go to Stage 28. If the player wins with the timer at 40 or more, then go to Stage 29.
Proving Grounds[]
| Stage 25 | |
|---|---|
| If the player wins while having 139 or less health | If the player wins wile having 140 or more health |
Mitsurugi defeated the young man who claimed to be the swordmaster's apprentice, but he was unable to meet the swordmaster himself. Descending the mountain, he encountered a nomad caravan who claimed to have seen a knight in blue armor whose description sounded like that of Nightmare's. After learning as much as he could from them, Mitsurugi set off immediately in pursuit of the Azure Knight. The city at which he eventually arrived had already been destroyed. Was this the work of the Azure Knight? As Mitsurugi pondered this, he was suddenly attacked!
Mitsurugi defeated the swordmaster's apprentice. Because the swordmaster was injured, Mitsurugi was unable to face him in combat, but he did receive helpful information. Afterwards, Mitsurugi headed west, tracking a certain man. According to the swordmaster, this man was being pursued by Nightmare, so if Mitsurugi found him, Nightmare would be there too. Pursuing the man, Mitsurugi arrived at the ruins of a city and was suddenly attacked! |
| Go to Stage 29. | Go to Stage 30. |
Grand Labyrinth[]
Stage 26
---
Pre-battle
Mitsurugi pursued the man who claimed to be the strongest of all. But upon arriving at the location, he heard that the man he sought had been hiding inside a giant labyrinth for some time now. Many people had lost their way in the labyrinth and never been seen again. The local people tried to stop Mitsurugi from going there, for his own sake. Upon seeing the fearsome appearance of the labyrinth entrance, Mitsurugi understood why the natives feared it. Mitsurugi lit a torch and stepped inside.
Post-battle
Were the martial artists seeking the same man Mitsurugi sought? Or were they merely bandits? Whatever the case might be, Mitsurugi proceeded through the labyrinth, fighting off the enemies who attacked him. A gentle flowing breeze alerted him to a nearby exit. His food was running low, and his body was worn out. What to do...
Episode 8[]
Jyurakudai Villa[]
Stage 27
---
Pre-battle
He had done everything he could, but the situation had shown no signs of improving. It seemed that he had reached a dead end. His legs carried him naturally to nature and his homeland, but there were no answers to be found there. Now, wandering almost aimlessly, he encountered a change of fate in the city of Kyoto. Sensing a fierce aggressive presence fixated on him, Mitsurugi's heart burned with excitement for the first time in ages.
Post-battle
Feeling the swordswoman's burning soul through the blade of his sword, Mitsurugi was ashamed at the immaturity of his own heart. His heart had allowed itself to be overcome by the curse. He lived by the sword. It didn't matter even if his life was being chiseled away; if anything, it was precisely in situations like this that he had to maintain a strong will. He once again made up his mind to seek a strong warrior -- to seek Nightmare.
Underground Sanctum[]
Stage 28
---
Pre-battle
The mansion was in an uproar. He needed to leave quickly. Mitsurugi waited for a chance to sneak past the guards and then ran to the port, sneaking onto the closest ship. The ship would surely leave by morning. But where would it go? The ship's destination was Japan. Mitsurugi went ahead and gathered information there as well, learning that a woman whose description matched Taki's had sealed away a monster. If she was involved, then it might be an incident related to Soul Edge...
If the Player had gotten at least one Perfect victory, then they can choose to go to Stage 32 or not.
Post-battle
Taki had already left the area, but Mitsurugi did find something. The enemy he had defeated had possessed a fragment of Soul Edge, and this fragment was different from the ones he had seen before. It emitted a strong, piercing light, as if reacting to something. If he followed after this reaction, he might be able to reach Soul Edge directly. And there he would find Nightmare!
Regardless of whether the Player chose to go to Stage 32 or not, head to Stage 36.
Water Mill Valley[]
Stage 29
---
Pre-battle
Successfully defeating the guard, Mitsurugi obtained the information he desired. Ming had searched for the Sword of Heroes several times in the past, but never with any success. In other words, Soul Edge was not in this country. After carefully investigating the information he had obtained, he headed west. The city at which he eventually arrived had already been destroyed. Was it the work of the man he sought? As Mitsurugi pondered this, he was suddenly attacked!
If the Player had gotten at least one Perfect victory, then they can choose to go to Stage 33 or not.
Post-battle
The girl introduced herself as Talim and apologized for mistaking him for a thief. She lived in hiding here with a handful of orphans. They had lived in fear of a knight in blue armor who had recently appeared. Faced with his power, they had no choice but to hide away. Several weeks ago, however, a knight had suddenly appeared wielding an enormous sword, and the blue knight had left in pursuit of this man. It was Nightmare! But who was this knight with an enormous sword...?
Regardless of whether the Player chose to go to Stage 33 or not, head to Stage 36.
Water Mill Valley[]
Stage 30
---
If the Player had gotten at least one Perfect victory, then they can choose to go to Stage 34.
Regardless of whether the Player chose to go to Stage 34 or not, head to Stage 37.
Grand Labyrinth[]
Stage 31
---
Pre-battle
The further in he went, the heavier the air grew. A few moments before, he had started to feel that someone was following him, and that made him even more uneasy. A few moments later, he sensed his pursuer's intent to kill!
