Original Timeline

Voldo (ヴォルド, Vorudo) is a character in the Soul series of fighting games. Voldo made his first appearance in Soul Edge and has returned for all the following sequels.

Voldo first appeared in Soul Edge, offering the first insights of his unpredictable play style and mannerisms. Later, in the sequel, Soulcalibur, he gained many of his staple moves and traits that would later stay in his reappearance during following games Soulcalibur II, Soulcalibur III and Soulcalibur IV. He is one of the few characters to have been present in every version (either arcade or home) of almost all of the games in the series; in the main series, he, Siegfried, MitsurugiNightmare and Cervantes are the only characters to have appeared in every installment. Voldo remains one of the most well known and popular characters in the series due to his unique playstyle and disturbing appearance. Voldo is incapable of sight and speech. Thus, making him reliant on his senses and only being able to make grunting, groaning and hissing noises.

What lies in his soul is Allegiance. In Soulcalibur V’s promotional material he is referred to as He Who Is Bound By Blind Allegiance.

Appearance[]

Due to his appearance, Voldo is considered as an oddity, even among the Soul series' cast. Following his debut appearance in Soul Edge, all of his costumes had a very direct approach to the sado-masochistic slave theme which is associated with him. Voldo almost always wears a leather harness, which resembles a head trainer, covering his eyes and mouth. Most of his costumes also include other fetish elements, such as spikes, strings tied tightly around his body, thongs revealing his buttocks and parts of his costumes are made from see-through fishnet. In Soulcalibur IV his initial concept even had a ball gag, but this wasn't included in the game, possibly due to its offensiveness or to avoid a higher rating. His final design in Soulcalibur IV includes an element from his 2P costume from Soul Edge - monoculars. However, in this costume, he has three of them, two where his eyes should be and one in the middle of his forehead.

Voldo's Soul Calibur V outfit is seemingly less bondage themed, though he does sport a very outlandish suspender depicting a spider. When he loses the colorful fur during battle, it's revealed that he's dressed in his usual way.

Biography[]

Voldo's Edge Master Mode in the first game on the series, Soul Edge, revealed his past as the right-hand man of Italian weapons merchant Vercci, known as the Merchant of Death, due to his business with the Spanish Armada. Vercci desired Soul Edge to form part of his collection of rare weapons, and Voldo stood as the head of the expeditions in his search, even contracting the services of the feared Spanish Captain Cervantes de Leon, and later accompanied Vercci when he decided to take the search personally. When word came that the Italian Wars broke on Italy and that Vercci's possessions were the first targets, Vercci grew angry. He moved his fleet, his only remaining possession, on an uninhabited island off the coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea and dug a 50-mt deep shaft that would serve as his tomb and vault. Voldo would later be instructed to slay the sailors that helped in the construction to avoid the location of Vercci's Money Pit to be revealed, then later shut himself with his deceased master. The Money Pit would later become Voldo's staple stage, featuring in every game in different locations like the main vault (in Soul Edge) or the Top Tier (in Soulcalibur II). Voldo would remain sealed underground, turning himself into the guardian of the tomb and slaying those who ventured to steal, making rumors of the island, its treasures and its "ghost guardian" spread around the globe. Years later, Voldo would hear his master's voice commanding him to search Soul Edge once again, making him leave the tomb to do so.

In his second appearance in the sequel Soulcalibur, it is stated in his profile that Voldo's search of Soul Edge ended in failure, and he returned to the Money Pit to find it flooded by a storm. After saving what he could, Voldo remained inside for the 3 year span between both games, later to reemerge from the pit following a woman with the essence of Soul Edge, Ivy, who tried to find leads on the sword for herself.

The profile on his next appearance, in Soulcalibur II, states how Voldo returned to the Money Pit after taking Yoshimitsu's katana, mistaking it for Soul Edge due to its evil aura, only to find years later an intruder with Soul Edge fragments. Voldo realized the katana was not Soul Edge and set out on a new search, collecting fragments while seeking it.

His appearance in the fourth game, Soulcalibur III, states he, during one of his periodic visits to the Pit, found the tomb ransacked and the sword he mistook for Soul Edge stolen alongside the fragments he collected in his travels. Since the thieves were apparently interested in Soul Edge, he decided to track them down and force them to reveal any information of the sword they know. He also came to realize he was someday going to die and leave the pit unprotected, so he also started to search a worthy successor, which his ending states could be Lizardman (Aeon Calcos), though this is not canon.

In Soulcalibur IV, Voldo does find Soul Edge with Nightmare at Ostrheinsburg. As he picked up the sword, he heard Soul Edge's voice, in disguise of his master's, telling him that he has done well in finding Soul Edge and that now he must offer his soul. However, the true voice of Voldo's master spoke to him, warning Voldo of the Evil Sword's trickery. Whether this was a spirit, or simply Voldo's imagination remains a mystery. It seems Voldo took Soul Edge into his guardianship, protecting the sword from those that sought it, but in turn also protecting humanity from its malevolence by preventing it from ever being wielded.

According to Soulcalibur V, Soul Edge's illusion of Vercci was shattered from Voldo's mind by a purifying blow from Kilik's Kali-Yuga. He returned to Vercci's Money Pit with the intention to become its guardian once again, only to find it had been ransacked by thieves in his absence. Voldo spent the next several years murdering the ones responsible and retrieving every piece of treasure stolen. Even after the collection was complete, Voldo continued to search, this time for the object his master had always desired and he had been so close to acquiring: Soul Edge.

In 1607, Voldo serves under Graf Dumas, and battles Patroklos when he attempts to kill Dumas. Later, after Patroklos reunites with his sister, Pyrrha, they are ambushed by Voldo. Patroklos is wounded by him, and Pyrrha is forced to take up arms and fight him.

Profile[]

Soulcalibur[]

The Italian merchant Vercci had sought Soul Edge, yet he went to the grave without ever obtaining it. After Vercci's death, his loyal vassal Voldo became the guardian of the Money Pit, which was Vercci's treasure vault in addition to being his tomb.

Voldo had once attempted to fulfill his Master's last wish of obtaining Soul Edge and even ventured abroad in its pursuit, but he was unsuccessful.

While Voldo was guarding the pit one day, a trespasser appeared. Voldo had chased the woman away, but upon doing so, heard the familiar voice of his Master.

"Voldo, that woman...She had the scent of Soul Edge upon her...Hunt her down, and bring me Soul Edge this time!!"

Chapter VI: Hell Guardian[12]

After his unsuccesful search for Soul Edge, Voldo returned to the Money Pit and found the pit flooded by a storm. He took every means to drain and restore the pit but finally gave up as an entire section sunk under water. Meanwhile, a female fighter violated the Money Pit searching for a note Vercci had left about Soul Edge.

Voldo allows no one to invade his Master's sanctuary! From darkness the guardian attacked the female fighter, but she was armed with a mysterious weapon and her fighting style troubled him. The battle ended when the female fighter ran away guarding herself with her weapon. Voldo kneeled in front of Master Vercci's coffin, as usual, to report that the invader was cleared. Suddenly, he heard the sweet voice.

"Voldo, didn't you feel her dark aura? She had the scent of Soul Edge... Chase her, and bring me Soul Edge! Do you understand? Remember, I trust you... "

Hearing the voice of the master, rose colors swept into Voldo’s grayish cheeks and hot blood flowed through his veins. Voldo left the Money Pit again to get Soul Edge.

Soulcalibur II[]

The Italian merchant of death named Vercci was one of many who sought Soul Edge. During the search for the weapon, Vercci lost a large portion of his wealth to war. Vercci dug a pit on a small island, where he hid the remains of his wealth.

The chasm, which later became known as the Money Pit, had a guardian named Voldo.

Even after his master's death, Voldo guarded the vault faithfully. At the same time, he sought the weapon his master desired.

One day, after Voldo chased an intruder away, he heard his long-lost master's voice. Obeying his master's orders, Voldo followed Soul Edge's aura emanating from the female intruder's sword. Eventually, he succeeded in bringing back a single-handed sword that emanated a strange aura. Yet he did not hear the voice of his deceased master.

Four years passed without hearing his master's voice.

When he defeated an intruder one day, Voldo found several metal shards that possessed the same aura as Soul Edge. Voldo finally understood why he did not hear his deceased master's voice. The sword he brought back was not Soul Edge.

Voldo set out once again. This time, he would bring Soul Edge back to his master.

"Grace appears most purely in that human form which either has no consciousness or an infinite consciousness. That is, in the puppet or in the god."
-Heinrich von Kleist, Über das Marionettentheater

Somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, there was a small island said to hold the treasures of a wealthy Italian merchant of death named Vercci. His riches were stored in a chasm known to thieves who schemed to plunder it as the Money Pit. Rumors circulated amongst them about the numerous traps that awaited foolish intruders and of the eerie guardian who watched over Vercci's fortune deep within the pit.

Although Vercci was renowned for saying, "There is nothing that I do not possess," there was one thing he desired more than anything...Soul Edge. Vercci tried everything within his powers to locate the coveted weapon- going as far as leading a fleet of his ships on an expedition- but ultimately failed. During his absence, Vercci lost most of his fortune to a war that broke out in Italy.

His possessions were the only things that mattered to Vercci. He took whatever treasures remained on his fleet of ships and hid it in a pit that he had dug with the help of his loyal followers on a small island in the Mediterranean Sea. Vercci rigged the chasm with countless traps in order to ward off treasure-seeking intruders. And for over twenty years, the Money Pit ensnared thieves who attempted to steal his treasure, just as Vercci expected.

There was a man who stood watch over the treasure- a guardian feared by all who dared to enter the pit. He was Vercci's loyal vassal. The man served Vercci on his expedition, helped dig the pit, and after his master's death, defended the vault faithfully. After years of solitude in darkness, the man lost his sight and sanity. He even forgot his name, which was Voldo. All of this must have been trivial for him, for his only desire was to serve his master's will by protecting the treasure.

But he had forgotten something. Something was missing.

In the silence broken only by the death throes of foolhardy intruders, Voldo slowly began to piece together what he had forgotten- Soul Edge, the treasure amongst treasures.

Voldo ventured abroad in an attempt to fulfill his master's last wish. He followed numerous leads, and he returned periodically to the pit to ensure the safety of the treasure and the working condition of the traps. The guardian focused solely on performing his duties.

One day, after Voldo chased an intruder away, he heard his long-lost master's voice. Obeying his master's orders, Voldo followed Soul Edge's aura emanating from the female intruder's sword. And after a long journey, he finally succeeded in bringing back a single-handed sword that emitted a strange aura.

Upon his return, Voldo found his master's pit flooded with seawater. Voldo sat quietly, barely moving, on his master's throne in the small chamber behind the statue of Vercci, which overlooked the treasure vault now covered by water.

Voldo believed he had found Soul Edge. He had obtained the one thing Vercci desired. Yet he did not hear the voice of his deceased master…

Four years passed, but it was as if time stood still inside the Money Pit. The guardian's duty of defending the Money Pit never changed. Voldo felt as though he would spend eternity in the silence of the pit, waiting to hear his master's voice once again.

But fate brought Voldo back to the present. When he defeated an intruder one day, Voldo found several metal shards that possessed the same aura as Soul Edge. And although each piece was merely a fragment, they seemed to radiate the same amount of power as Soul Edge itself.

Voldo finally understood why he did not hear his deceased master's voice. The sword he brought back was not Soul Edge. The guardian did not know whether or not the metal pieces were truly from Soul Edge, but he knew that the truth would be revealed if he searched for the weapon once more.

Voldo collected the fragments, placed them on the throne carefully, and then ventured outside. His mission was to bring Soul Edge- the weapon his master desired to the very end of his life -back to the Money Pit.[13]

Soulcalibur III[]

In-game Profile
Obeying the orders of his late master, Voldo searched for Soul Edge and returned to the Money Pit with fragments of the evil sword. Voldo was deeply hurt to discover that the vertical shaft had been ransacked in his absence. He emitted an otherworldly wail of indescribable sadness and begged his late master for forgiveness.

While inspecting the treasure, however, he discovered a new truth. The greedy thieves had taken the "false" Soul Edge he had obtained previously, along with the fragments of Soul Edge he had collected. The intruders were seeking Soul Edge, just like him. If he could track down these people and force them to tell him everything they knew about Soul Edge, it would surely make his search easier.

Imagining his beloved master encouraging him and speaking to him with kind words, Voldo shivered with excitement. Of course, those thieves who had touched the treasure of his sacred master must die a fitting death.

After preparing to leave the Money Pit, Voldo sensed the presence of a new intruder. He went out himself and disposed of the thief. Voldo then thought to himself in silence. If only he could obtain Soul Edge--the last treasure Master Vercci sought--he would be able to dedicate himself to protecting the Money Pit. But someday, he too would leave this world, just as his master had. He would need a successor to carry on his will and protect the treasure.

Another guardian...Surely Master Vercci would approve of this idea. Feeling satisfied, Voldo thought over this idea while preparing for his journey.

The guardian of the secret storehouse ascended from the dark abyss to the surface and began to wander the outside world in silence...

Soulcalibur IV[]

Voldo had infiltrated the ruins of Ostrheinsburg, and arrived at last before Soul Edge. The cursed sword rested in the hands of the Azure Knight seated upon the castle throne. Seeing his chance to take the sword, Voldo took a stealthy step toward the motionless Knight.

Soul Edge--the world's last singular treasure. How Voldo's late master Vercci had longed to make it his own! In the years after his passing, Voldo had continued to serve his master, body and soul, and worked to fulfill his master's last wish. Now, at last, his search neared an end.

"Voldo," a voice said. A jolt ran through Voldo as he held Soul Edge, for the voice belonged to his master. "Well done, Voldo. I am most pleased. But you still have another task ahead of you." Warmth welled up in Voldo's closed eyes: tears, which had deserted him long ago. Yes, he thought, I must protect Soul Edge, the peerless treasure you sought. Voldo had a new calling, and it filled him with such joy that a wordless moan escaped his throat.

And while Soul Edge managed to possess his heart--bending his firm sense of allegiance to a new purpose--it could not change it. Within his heart, Voldo only saw and served one master: his beloved Vercci. Though his territory had changed from Vercci's hallowed tomb to the dark capital Ostrheinsburg, his hunt remained the same: to destroy the "master's" enemies.

Amidst the evil that enveloped the land of Ostrheinsburg, a man crept from shadow to shadow. The sinister warriors that would, under normal circumstances, bar the intruder’s way, did not appear. Instead, he saw a single bird winging its way toward the castle, as if guiding him. Soon the cursed castle ruins rose before him. A black flutter beckoned him inside. The intruder, Voldo, skillfully maneuvered his freakish form along the corridors until, at last, he arrived before Soul Edge. The cursed sword rested in the hands of the Azure Knight, who was seated upon the castle throne. An eerie air permeated the throne room. Seeing his chance to steal the sword, Voldo took a stealthy steep forward toward the motionless Knight.

Soul Edge—the last one-of-a-kind treasure in the world. How Voldo's late master Vercci had longed to make it his own! Though amassed great wealth as a weapons merchant, and claimed there was nothing he could not possess, this one object had eluded Vercci throughout his lifetime. In the decades after his passing, Voldo had served his master body and soul, and even now worked to fulfill his master’s last wish. Out of the yawning tomb he had crawled—the resting place of Vercci and his fortunes, which the world at large called the Money Pit—and wandered from land to land in search of the cursed sword. And now, at last, his search was nearing an end.

As Voldo took Soul Edge in his hand, a jolt ran through him. “Voldo,” a familiar, reassuring voice said gently. It was a voice he could never forget. Though Voldo had long been sightless, his master’s figure appeared in his mind. Unconsciously, he fell to his knees and touched his forehead to the floor, raising Soul Edge above him as an offering.

“Well done, Voldo. I am most pleased, but you have yet another task ahead of you. Do you know what that is?” Warmth welled up behind Voldo’s closed eyes—tears, which had deserted him long ago. Yes, he thought, I need to protect Soul Edge. Not even death had stopped his master from desiring this peerless, irreplaceable treasure; there would be no end to the rabble who sought it. Voldo had a new calling, and it filled him with such joy that a wordless moan escaped his throat.

Voldo had given up everything and lived only out of mad, blind devotion. With his thoughts suspended in time, none could ever break his spirit—but Soul Edge struck deeper, from within. It reached into his heart and possessed him, bending that firm sense of allegiance to a new purpose.

And while his territory had changed from Vercci's hallowed tomb to the dark capital Ostrheinsburg, his purpose remained the same same: destroy the “master’s” enemies. Soul Edge had worked its malfestation on Voldo, but while it could possess his heart, it could not change it. Inside his heart, Voldo only served one master: his beloved Vercci.[7]

Soulcalibur V[]

Voldo was extremely loyal to his former master, the wealthy Italian merchant Vercci. Though the real Vercci died, Soul Edge conjured an illusion of Vercci in order to turn Voldo into an obedient puppet. The bittersweet illusion was dispelled once and for all by Kilik wielding the Kali-Yuga.
Having been freed from Soul Edge's control, Voldo returned to the "Money Pit", the underground vault where Vercci had kept his treasures. The sight that greeted Voldo upon his return was that of a nearly empty Money Pit that had been ransacked by thieves. Armed with intense dedication and his uniquely enhanced sense of smell, Voldo managed to track down every single thief, kill them, and recover the stolen treasure.
After many years, Voldo had returned every piece of treasure to its rightful place in Vercci's Money Pit, and the vault looked as beautifully extravagant as ever. Still, Voldo did not feel fulfilled, like something was missing... something that he had felt so close to 17 years ago, yet lacked now.
Sealing the Money Pit with great care, Voldo returned to the surface world, determined to acquire his "Master", Soul Edge.
Though the "Master" Soul Edge had previously shown him was merely an illusion, the effect had been powerful enough that Voldo now considered Soul Edge to be his master. [9]

Soulcalibur IV Voldo's Ending

As Voldo looks at Soul Edge, Vercci's voice can be heard saying "Now take this sword and give your soul to me." Before Voldo goes to grab the sword, he looks back at a Vercci, who is depicted as a bright, floating light. Vercci cries out, "Voldo! Don't be fooled!" The screen fades to black and then shows Voldo placing Soul Edge onto a throne. A group of thieves/soldiers then enter the room, but they don't make it far as Voldo takes out every one of them. He then bows to Soul Edge and walks away.

The text-only epilogue says that the cursed sword will never be held by mankind again as long as the guardian of the sword keeps his vigil.

Fighting Style[]

Voldo is easily recognizable by his strange and unique style of play. His moveset is based on contorting his body in unnatural ways, making him an extremely unpredictable fighter. He also has many stances that compliment his odd style, like his Mantis Crawl in which he stands on his four limbs face-first. Also unique to Voldo is his ability to fight with his back towards his opponent. He uses a different set of attacks in this mode, though he returns to face-forward mode to execute grabs. Due to the nature of his weapons, Voldo has one of the shortest range in the game, which is considered a major flaw. Also, due to his lack of eyesight, Voldo will sometimes miss the opponent if they are quicker than him. Despite these difficulties, he is generally considered as a high tier character by the tournament community.

Soulcalibur IV[]

Self-Taught[]

During his long, lonely vigil protecting his master's treasures in the Money Pit, Voldo's body and soul slowly adapted to the lightless environment of the vault. His eyes lost their sight, but instead he developed the ability to detect enemies in the blackness. His powers of conscious reasoning faded and he came to be guided by pure instinct.

He eventually forgot that he was a man, and his movements have become alien and inhuman. Inexperienced fighters become so confused they do not even realize they are being attacked, and veteran warriors find that their battle experience is for naught in the face of this bizarre opponent.[7]

Soulcalibur V[]

Personal style[]

The "Money Pit" where Vercci kept all of his treasures was literally a dark pit where even the sun's light could not reach, and though it was ideal for the safe storage of valuables, no one in their right mind would ever use it as a primary residence. Yet Voldo lived there for many decades, his loyalty to Vercci granting him immunity to the hardships associated with life in the Money Pit.
Life in perpetual darkness had robbed Voldo of his sight, but in exchange had granted him enhanced hearing. Voldo would use his powerful sense of hearing in conjunction with his superhuman agility to protect his master's treasure from thieves.
The eerie movements displayed by Voldo's agile body push the limits of what could be considered human, yet Voldo's katar techniques were all developed through the many years he fought by his master's side as Vercci's trusted right-hand man. It was Voldo's gratitude, trust, and devotion that had honed his skills to such a keen edge. What could be more noble and human than that?[11]

Critical Finish[]

Great Gear of Madness: He attaches himself to his opponent from behind, whom he sets on fire rolling around. Voldo then jumps up and slams the opponent to the ground.

Critical Edge[]

Wheel of Madness: Voldo start his Critical Edge with a bow, and then attacks his opponent in a circular shape, in the end he will suprees his opponent and back to normal slightly hurts them.
