Won Gabok (ウォン・ガボク, Won Gaboku, Hangul: 원가복) is a minor character in the Soul series of games. A Taoist and the leader of the militant cult known as the Society of Salvation. He is also a powerful Malfested and member of Nightmare's new cabal, being assisted by Iska Acht.
Gabok's epithet is "Sword of Cursed Flames".
Biography[]
Gabok is a former Korean monk and the younger brother of Won Soo-hyun who represents the divide between West Korea alongside his followers called the "Westerners" in the fight against East Korea.
Gabok first appears in Hwang's story as a cult leader who manipulates and uses his followers for his own search for Soul Edge.
He strives to create chaos in both Korea and Japan.
Personality[]
Gabok is a brash, pompous individual who mocks and underestimates all of his opponents during battles. He does not take rejections lightly and holds grudges towards whomever acts against his will. His negative characteristics are also detailed when Mi-na mentions her meeting with him in a later conversation with Hwang, describing him as rude and full of himself.
His opinions on his homeland, Korea mostly reflects that of present day North Korea's, focusing heavily on using force and military power to wreak havoc and assert dominion over his enemies. This ideological split divided the nation into two factions. Gabok currently holds an important court position in West Korea under the leader Jeong Cheol.
Despite this, the only individual he finds solace and support in is Iska Acht, showing her the utmost respect, contrary to how he treats his followers/peers in the Society of Salvation. He also takes note of Hwang's evolution into a monk-like figure (like himself) and looks forward to meeting him/battling him in the future.
Profile[]
Won Gabok[]
Won Gabok is a young official of the Korean government and a member of the political faction known as the Westerners. He lacks a certain degree of loyalty to his faction, and though he can perform his duties well, he still falls behind his superiors. His good looks, flashy attire, and reliance on flattery to charm others makes him quite the playboy.
As a government official, Gabok is privy to a wealth of information on domestic reports and the exploits of national hero Hwang Seong-gyeong, and he is able to conduct his own private investigations into matters. He is also said to belong to a faction of the Westerners who see Soul Edge as the "Sword of Salvation," and some say he may play a key role in a group of young Westerners known as the "Society of Salvation," who supposedly use a medium and mysterious jewels to divine the whereabouts of Soul Edge. These claims remain to be verified, however. The only thing certain about Gabok is his penchant for womanizing—most rumors about him come from women he has sweet-talked.
Perhaps more perplexing than any of Gabok's words or actions is his reputation, which seems to differ slightly whether one asks his fellow officials, or the women who have fallen victim to his charms.
However, it remains possible that neither group has a firm grasp on who Gabok is and what he is really like.
Behind his light-hearted smile and eloquent way with words lies something more mysterious, and none have yet to realize it. Any that have are nowhere to be found...
"Sword of Cursed Flames" Gabok[]
When Gabok embraced the evil inside him, Acht, an attendant, chose to transform him into an evil being. He then took on the moniker "Sword of Cursed Flames" and joined the malfested serving directly under Nightmare.
However, he was originally a man of the Won Family of the Six Heavenly Arts and younger brother to the monk Won Soo-hyun. He showed prowess in demon sealing and talisman magic, but what he had in skill, he lacked in virtue. After being thrown out of his home following a scandal, he went missing. In recent years, he suddenly showed up again as an official working behind the scenes at the Joseon court, but this was all seen as part of a plan to revive Soul Edge.
He grew up beside his gifted sister Soo-hyun, who was lauded as the greatest talent of the Won family; this is likely the root of his twisted feelings of jealousy and inferiority to those with natural talent, and the reason why these intense emotions occasionally explode. Yet Acht does not criticize this and instead seems to enjoy Gabok's venomous fury. Gabok also seems to consider Acht as someone special and uses the name "Princess" as a form of respect.
Demonic Gabok[]
Astral Chaos is a extradimensional realm that operates outside of earthly understanding. Those influenced by its turmoil transform into inhuman beings when their souls overpower their corporeal vessels. When he merged with Acht to gain the powers of chaos, it was by these supernatural laws that Gabok turned into a demon cloaked in cursed flames. His powers far surpass those of regular malfested, and if one were to slay him, they would also require powers beyond human understanding. Were it not for the combination of Hwang's quick wit in using the risky Talismans of Iron Will and the ancient cleansing light of the Mirror of Evil's Bane reacting to Gabok's evil energy, the Motien Pass ruins would have been reduced to ashes. If the sword malfested were to possess a secret weapon of similar strength, then the world would soon be swallowed in disaster and tragedy.
