Won Soo-hyun (ウォン・スヒョン, Won Suhyon, Hangul: 원수현) is a minor character in the Soul series of games. A Taoist who saved the life of Hwang Seong-gyeong and trained him to be the next Secret Royal Inspector while providing him with powerful talismans.
Profile[]
Won Soo-hyun[]
Deep within the Motien Pass Ruins resides a lone elderly woman, sole protector of the ruins and its secrets, and creator of the dense magical barrier surrounding the area. Normally, Taoist monks adept in eternal youth spells show no signs of aging, but the immense power required to maintain the barrier has aged this monk considerably. Some might argue that without such immortal power, a barrier like the one around the Motien Pass Ruins would be impossible.
This withered woman is Won Soo-hyun, a Taoist monk of the Six Heavenly Arts. She was once a renowned secret royal inspector, but is now retired and remains secluded in the ruins she protects. The barrier she has erected may be breached by none without her explicit permission, even if those wishing to enter the ruins belong to the same clan as her.
Hwang would eventually find himself saved by Soo-hyun, and with her unable to leave the ruins, he would serve as a secret royal inspector of sorts in her stead. As to why the elderly monk had saved him, Hwang would soon find his answer as he continued his journey...
Won Soo-hyun (Young)[]
After undoing the barrier surrounding the Motien Pass ruins, Soo-hyun has regained her full strength. A master of the Six Heavenly Arts's arts, she is considered to be the closest to immortality among all the generations of Won family guardians. Through a traditional ritual, she won for herself the Sword of Cleansing Flame and the Chains of Binding, two of the five treasures gifted to the Won family from the celestial immortals.
Gifted with an affinity for the element of water, Soo-hyun is especially skilled with the medicinal arts. By reciting an incantation while burning a talisman, then mixing the ashes into water in a practice called "fu shui," she can create a concoction so powerful that it even rescued the fatally wounded Hwang from death's clutches.
Before she inherited the role as guardian of the Mirror of Evil's Bane, she worked as a secret royal inspector for the Joseon royalty, and those who know the secrets of her role speak of her as a legend. Even after becoming the guardian of the Mirror of Evil's Bane, Soo-hyun keeps in telepathic contact with her many connections to solve issues across the globe. This altruism is nothing more than a reflection of her personal creed: "Talent must not be taken for granted"—in other words, those with power are decreed by the heavens to fulfill their duty. However, contacting others over extreme distances leaves Soo-hyun dangerously open to attack, as it consumes a large amount of Soo-hyun's power and requires her to undo the barrier around the ruins.
To the shame of the Won family, Soo-hyun's younger brother Gabok fell to darkness. Soo-hyun feels this is her personal responsibility and has sworn to take her brother down, even if it costs her life.

- Her official position as Secret Royal Inspector was derived from an actual historical position that existed in Ancient Korea known as "Amenosa (암행어사)".
- Her grey-haired appearance is indicated to be the result of her using most of her power to protect the Mirror of Evil's Bane, as when confronting Won Gabok in Hwang's Chronicle of Souls she is shown with a much more youthful appearance.
