In Soulcalibur V's promotional material, he is referred to as He who lives by the code.

Biography[]

Soulcalibur V[]

Planted firmly in the earth before the warrior stood a katana; purple flames rippled and danced about it.

The sword had a name: Yoshimitsu. It was a demonic blade, steeped in the evil of Soul Edge and ever thirsty for blood.

The sword's last owner, too, had been called Yoshimitsu—by bestowing his own name upon the blade, he had sealed its evil power. But he had been cut down just moments earlier by his dearest disciple, a young warrior well-versed in the arts of Manji Ninjutsu. The disciple made a vow: He would see through the mission Yoshimitsu had begun.

He reached out and gripped the sword. The flames licked at his hand, but his voice did not waver as he called out:

"I am Yoshimitsu the Second! Calm thyself!"

The flames subsided; the sword had accepted him as the new Yoshimitsu.

Only one man was allowed to carry that name; the title was earned by slaying its previous holder. And so it was that a new warrior, overcoming sorrow and doubt, would continue the fight against evil.

Yoshimitsu, leader of the chivalrous Manji Clan, savior of the weak, enemy of the strong—it was a name that brought hope to people.

Profile[]

A katana shrouded in purple flames stands thrust into the ground before a lone man.
The katana's name is Yoshimitsu, a once-fine blade that was steeped in Soul Edge's dark energies and transformed into a cursed katana that hungers for blood. Having lost its master, there was no one left to suppress its evil flames.
The cursed katana's former master was also named Yoshimitsu. He had given his own name to his katana in order to seal its evil energy. But now he lay dead, killed by the very man he had trained in the ways of Manji ninjutsu, the man in whom he had seen so much potential. This man, who was once Yoshimitsu's most trusted confidant, now grasped the hilt of the cursed katana. Without so much as flinching or crying out, the man allowed the katana's purple flames to engulf his hand and arm. Then, breaking his silence, he shouted triumphantly, "I am Yoshimitsu II! Quiet yourself, cursed katana!"
Accepting this man as the "new Yoshimitsu", the cursed katana silently withdrew its purple flames.
There can only be one master of the cursed katana, and as such, that role can only be passed on to another through the death of the former master.
Overcoming his sorrow and uncertainty, Yoshimitsu stands ready to strike down all evil.
Yoshimitsu is the leader of the Manji clan, and the name represents the hope of his people; a man who will aid the weak and crush the strong.[1]

Personality[]

In Soulcalibur V, the original Yoshimitsu was succeeded, under unknown conditions (possibly because of his death), by a new and possibly younger ninja. This new Yoshimitsu seems to be a serious and focused individual, looking more devoted in training and developing his fighting style. He is also less quirky than the original, although he retains some of the first's humorous mannerisms.

Fighting Style[]

Manji Ninjutsu[]

The Manji clan lived in secrecy at the base of Mount Fuji. The unique fighting style they developed looked like nothing more than random and bewildering movements upon first glance, but in fact, each technique was carefully designed to mislead the target while striking at their weak points with lethal accuracy. The origins of this fighting style are said to be rooted in the Tang Dynasty, where the knowledge was hidden within various talents commonly accepted as a means of entertainment, and usually practiced by assassins.

The Manji clan was massacred by the historically prominent figure Nobunaga Oda, but Manji Ninjutsu lived on in a survivor, Yoshimitsu I, who went on to teach it to the clan's other remaining members.

Yoshimitsu II grew up with the Fu-Ma clan, but was adopted by Yoshimitsu I and taught Manji Ninjutsu as well as the value of honor. Yoshimitsu II displayed a natural aptitude for Manji Ninjutsu and soon surpassed all of the other Manji clan members. The spirit of his adoptive father and the old Manji clan now lives on in the soul of Yoshimitsu II.
