Zhang Wu (チャン・ウー, 張武[1]) is a minor character that is mentioned in the Soul series. A nunchaku user, he and his rival, Li Long, were known as the "Twin Bulwarks" of the emperor's guard.[2] Zhang Wu has yet to appear in any of the games, but he is mentioned a couple times in supplementary material for Soulcalibur, Soulcalibur: New Legends of Project Soul, and Soulcalibur VI.
History[]
Soulcalibur and Soulcalibur VI[]
After Li Long had disappeared after being ordered to find Soul Edge, Zhang Wu was tasked by the Emperor to locate the cursed sword and to assassinate his missing rival for his desertion.[1] Zhang Wu's search for both, however, proved to be fruitless.[2]
Li Long had taken a ship headed to Japan. The ship he had boarded belonged to a Ryukyuan merchant, and Li Long had passed his nunchaku skills down to the merchant's son, Maxi. While on the run, Li Long had used Zhang Wu's name instead of his own.[1][3]:111
Soulcalibur II[]
The last time Zhang Wu would be mentioned would be in Mitsurugi's profile. One day, Mitsurugi would happen upon a gravely wounded Zhang Wu, surrounded by assassins. Not intending to leave any eyewitnesses behind, the assassins attacked the samurai, but he managed to drive them back, saving Zhang Wu's life. Zhang Wu would hand a fragment of Soul Edge over to Mitsurugi, asking him to keep it safe, before disappearing in a dark alley. Mitsurugi, at first, had trouble believing that a powerful sword like Soul Edge could have been shattered but decided to believe him because "why would a man on the verge of death lie to a complete stranger?"[4]
Zhang Wu isn't actually named in Mitsurugi's profile, but Soulcalibur: New Legends of Project Soul would later confirm that the injured man is Zhang Wu.[3]:59
